I am a US citizen. I applied for PR in the family class (my husband is a Canadian citizen) in 2010 and landed in Feb 2011. Then we moved together to the US in Nov 2012. My understanding is that I may maintain my PR status indefinitely while living abroad with my husband because he is a Canadian citizen. Is this true?

My other question is, I have lost my PR card. I would like to receive a replacement card. I am confused about whether or not I can get one if I'm not living in Canada. If I am considered a permanent resident of Canada even while I'm living in the US with my husband, shouldn't I be able to have my card replaced?

When I travel to Canada to visit this summer, will I be able to enter with just my US passport? I would imagine they would want to see my PR card as well. The CIC website says that I will need to apply for a travel document. Is this like a visitor permit? We have a second (vacation) home in Canada and I would like to be able to travel there without much advance planning.

Thanks for any information.

OK I think I have answered some of my own questions. I called the border and they told me that as a non-resident of Canada and a US citizen, I may enter Canada to visit with only my US passport.

So that will allow me to visit my family in Canada this summer.

As far as receiving a replacement card, I understand I may only apply for a card from within Canada. So, may I mail my application while I'm visiting this summer? I downloaded the form (IMM5444E) and it wants to know your current residential address in Canada. Can I give the address of my relatives in Canada who I'll be visiting? I am not going to be "residing" in Canada for more than a few days but it seems like the implication is that I live there if I use a Canadian address on the form. Will this have tax implications? So confused...

Thanks

A PR card application must originate inside Canada so you can either mail it yourself from your relatives when you are there or send it to your relatives and ask them to mail it for you. It used to be that you had to pick up renewed cards in person but they are changing that a bit so if you are lucky, they will mail it to your relatives who can mail it to you.

As you are visa exempt, you do not need a PR card to enter Canada but if they see your name in the computer and ask if you are a PR, you might want to be able to prove that so make a copy of your landing documents and bring it along.

I was looking for some help here. I have a similar situation. I am outside Canada and can't find my PR card since 5 weeks now. I will contact the Canadian embassy in my area to report this loss. However, I am not sure how to apply for a new card. The website says you need to be in Canada. I'm thinking of visiting my friends/family later this month and mail the application from Canada itself. Will this be acceptable?
