Hello,
My PR expired 2 years ago. I'm 17 years old and we left Canada because my dad had some issues. Is it possible to renew it? Plus I'm applying to the university this year and going to university next year. Should I apply as national or international and when should I apply for renewal? And how long does it take to renew it. For example I should apply for renewal directly before going to university or when?

With the details that you have provided, i think it will be difficult for anyone to advise. for starters :

1. are you currently in canada.
2. how old are you now.
3. if you are a minor, what is the status of your parents (PR/Citizens/PR's resinding in canada, prs residing else where, have they kept up to the pr obligations etc)
4. if you are not a minor, what are your current stats wrt canada..

anything else you can provide for providing a complete pic where you are at

We made the PR in 2008, we went to Canada for 2 weeks in 2008 and then we didn't go anymore because my dad had work problems. I'm 16 and a half now I'm in senior year this year. We are outside Canada since 2008 and we didn't rebew our PR.

Here is another link:

Please read the links thoroughly to understand the whole situation.

Also, you are in the citizenship section, please visit the Permanent Residency Obligations section at the following link:

The posts by coolguy sam point some good links explaining the "PR Obligations" you need to maintain. here is the starting line "To maintain your status as a permanent resident, there are few requirements you must fulfill. One requirement is the residency obligation. You must live in Canada for at least two years within a five-year period. During this time you must be here physically."

i think it will require some good research by you in going through the various links before i guess you know what right questions that remain that you should ask. to be honest, i think you need to do a bit more homework now - because no one better than you who knows your timeline, situation etc.

My problem is that i have the PR but it expired 2 years ago and i want to renew it. Now since I'm a minor is it possible to renew it and my main question is when should i apply for it if lets say I'm going to university in october 2016. Plus i apply as a national or international student, and do you think they'll accept my renewal. how much time will it take to renew. i heard of the visa thing i forgot its name in which its just a one way, does that mean when i enter canada i can't leave it? when should i apply for the visa and when should i apply for the renewal. i think I might be understanding the issue wrong so i hope if someone could help me with all details
Thank you

So there are a couple of things here.

1. as a minor - you may not apply for renewal, your parents do. you will be included in there.
2. to be able to renew your PR, you would have had to maintain your PR obligations - read the above post and the links shared by coolguy sam
3. if you have not maintanined your pr obligation, you cannot renew your PR, but will have to put in a new application for a pr.

hope this clarifies at a high level.

What country are you a citizen of ?
