I am preparing for my PR card renewal and have a few questions regarding how to accurately present my employment history. Here’s a summary of my employment timeline and some points I need guidance on:

  1. Employment History Summary:
    • December 2020: I was laid off from a full-time position at a small company. Following this, I incorporated my own business and operated it for a few weeks, generating revenue that same month.
    • January 2021 - May 2021: I worked as a full-time employee at an audit firm but was laid off in May. After this, I claimed EI for 2.5 months, during which I traveled outside of Canada and did not receive EI.
    • December 2021 - January 2022: After returning to Canada, I resumed EI claims until January 2022.
    • January 2022 - March 2022: Worked full-time and then transitioned to a contractor role for a month, receiving income through my incorporated business. Since then, I have either been employed full-time with other companies or unemployed.
  2. Clarification Needed:
    • For the brief periods in 2020 and 2022 when I operated my own business, can I indicate that I was self-employed for those specific weeks?
    • During times when I was not self-employed or collecting EI, is it appropriate to list my status as "unemployed without EI"?
    • For the period in 2021 when I was laid off and receiving EI, should I categorize this as "unemployed with EI"?
Any guidance on how to correctly present this information would be greatly appreciated.

I think you need the exact dates (day, month and year) instead.

- I believe the forms ask for info only down to the monthly level for activity; so for each month, show the main activity.
- Do the forms REQUIRE you to specify whether you received EI or not? If they don't, the correct answer is just unemployed. If you need to disclose the location to break apart, do so. (These are by exact dates, I think?)
- If you think it's important / relevant to declare some additional info (like occasional periods of self-employment / part-time work), sure, just write a letter of explanation.

These are things up for your judgment. The purpose of them is to clarify your activity and - first and foremost - physical presence in Canada.
