Hi! I arrived in Canada in November 2024 with a PRTD (RC1) issued on Humanitarian and Compassionate (H&C) grounds. Now I’m trying to apply online through the portal, and there’s a section where you have to prove that you meet the Residency Obligation (RO). Obviously, I don’t meet the required time. I’m not really sure how to proceed—should I just explain that I was granted the PRTD on H&C grounds and hope that’s enough? Or should I upload all the documents and letters I submitted with my PRTD application? Has anyone been in a similar situation and successfully renewed their PR card? Thank youuu!

There are one or more cases in the residency obligations forum here, and you might also ask there:

I didn't keep track of the specific ones. One somewhat recent one, as I recall, basically involved submitting with explanation of the PRTD/H&C with at least some of the documentation provided for the PRTD application. I don't remember how long it took, but it wasn't immediate like with 'regular' PR card apps (but it wasn't a year or anything super long).

One caveat, I think that it's important not to leave the country during this period - until card received - as it's more likely that will delay the card issuance further. (Although it is possible that quite short trips may not be an issue, can't say for sure).

Good luck, let others know of your experience.

You getting the PRTD with H&C ground doesn't mean that you will be getting PR card renewal without meeting RO.
You can try to apply but will (if approved) only be getting a 1 year PR card.

It's the best to not travel until you meet RO and then apply for a new PR card once you meet RO.

Typically you shouldn’t have any problem getting PR card based on the RC1 code but would attach some of the proof of your H&C reasons just in case. You still need to consider your RO which is 730 days in the past 5 years if you plan on leaving the country once you have your PR card. Is there a reason you didn’t not apply right away? Did you remain in Canada after landing in November?

Hi, thank you for taking the time to answer. Yes, I have been in Canada since November. I didn't apply because I was afraid of not meeting the RO, so I waited to apply for the PR card, but I think it's better to apply now and see what they say. I think maybe they will ask for an interview. I would attach the documents I uploaded for my PRTD.

Hi, thank you for taking the time. I will check the forum link; maybe I can find someone in the same situation ;). Yes, I plan to wait until I receive my card before making any travel plans.

Hi thank you for taking the time; I was planning to wait until I met the RO, but it will take too long, and I prefer to make things right from the beginning, in the past I was confident I could meet the RO with out no problem but live happens, this time I will try to make thinks different so I can work or study (I don't know if I can do it with my expired PR card ), I will look in to the 1 year PR card, I didn't know they issue cards less than 5 years

You can't specifically apply for a 1 year card. You apply to renew your PR card and then IRCC decides if you get a 1 year or 5 year card.

Typically no issue getting a PR card if approved for PRTD with RC1 as long as you have not left Canada.
