PR (Permanent Residency) After 1 year of study?

Dear whom is reading this,

Im from London, UK. Im currently in Canada and came in as a visitor, As a British Citizen I do not need a visa, I can travel back and forth for up-to 6 months. Now, I have graduated in a B.Sc. In Civil Engineering. I would like to move to Canada and figured my best way to come would be to study here as finding a job seems merely impossible.

1.Am I right in assuming that if i take a 1 year course inside canada then after the 1 year course is complete, I may be able to apply for permanent residency?? and does it matter what the course may be.

2.And would it be possible to obtain a study permit from within Canada?

No, the normal route is student visa->post graduation work permit (the same length as student visa)->PR application.

Study permit can be applied from within canada as well.

Thank you for the information, But i was wondering will they definitely give you a work permit after completing a Course within Canada, And also Does it matter what course you take to be eligible? to obtain a work permit or PR, I have looked on various things on CiC but doesnt state exactly what courses will allow this and what wouldnt?

Hi Ali,

You have graduated as a Civil Engineer correct? From a UK University correct?

Are you a member of the Civil Engineers association in the UK?

You can easily enter any Masters or Post Grad Diploma program at any Canadian University as long as you graduated with good scores.

Also you should be able to find sponsored employment as a Civil Engineer if not do the Post Grad Study preferably 2 years get the Open Work permit for PGWP.

Try UBC, SFU UofT, etc well known Canadian Universities.

Also try to become a member of the Civil Engineers in BC or somewhere in Canada it helps with your profile for future Visa applications.

By the way UK Citizens usually have no problems becoming PR of Canada. Canada is biased that way

1. Yes i have got my Bachelors of Science In Civil Engineering From university in London, With NO outstanding fees (If that helps)

2. Unfortunately, Im not part of the Chartered Civil Engineers in London as you need atleast 2+ Of experience within a civil engineering job and my Relevant experience is currently only 3 Months. However i am signed up to ICE (Institute of Civil Engineers) in London.

3. I would love to do my masters however the international student fees are above the roof, and are ridiculously high, especially with no financial aid, so it would be very difficult, But do you know if you are allowed to work alongside your study permit?

4. What do you mean by a Post graduate program, besides a Masters?? I would like to take part in some sort of program (i.e. a post graduate program like you said) which will eventually Aid me in becoming a PR.

And Lol, I though the same that being a British citizen should help but so far it doesnt seem that way.

Also i have nothing to be ashamed of and my grades for my university were not the best, But averaging around 60% overall, which is Classified as a Second, Upper Class degree..

UofVic in Victoria BC has a Mech Engineering Department but they let you select a Civil Masters and allow to split up payments in 4 parts.

Don't know the Tuition you can contact them to check if it's an option for you or not.

Canadian Society of Civil Engineering will probably give you some type of Associate membership and you can network there as well.

There are lots of Engineering Diploma options but the costs for International Students is high one I looked at was $36k for a Diploma is ridiculous.

Have you tried assessing your points score under Express Entry? On the CIC website it seems your profile and specialist Degree from the UK ought to give you enough points to qualify for PR status bu t you have to check.

First of all orcabayvan, thank you so much for this information,

And I have looked into express entry but it just seems like you need of piled up lots of relevant experience prior to taking this route. Otherwise this method has been suggested by many. And im not too sure where on the CIC website does it check based on points, ive used to come to canada tool and if you dont have enough experience it just kind of says your not eligible.
