Hi All,

I am a Canadian PR holder . I am getting married in Feb, My would-be wife is already in process of applying PR , I still have 5 months to get married before i can apply dependent for her and what i believe, i cant apply immediately after getting married and even later also i have to submit lots of proofs and then even if every thing is good the processing time is 1 year.

Can some please suggest, what could you be the convenient and easy way to get PR for my future wife. Shall i ask her to go ahead with her PR application by her self or wait to get married and then i should apply dependent. for her.

Thanks and Regards

Supposedly she applies now, then you get married in February; if she hasn’t landed before you get married she’ll have to update CIC of her new marital status and you will be added to her application; if she has landed before you got married, she’ll have to sponsor you

Alternatively she can wait and apply then have you as a dependent. But she need to consider the points as well in this case

Does she have a TRV/visa or is from a visa waiver country? Will you get married in her country?

She can apply now under whatever other economic stream she is looking at. Those have historically been a bit faster; right now, not clear.

Once you are married, you can also apply under family sponsorship. The one application won't affect the other. Suggest she apply right now under the economic stream and make decisions about next steps down the road ie. when you see how the existing PR application is proceeding.

It will be important to update her marriage status once that is done - it won't affect your application as you already have status. Depending on covid restrictions in force, it may help her enter the country as your spouse.

Sorry I misunderstood.

She can go ahead with the PR application on her own. This is normally faster compared to spousal sponsorships.

She can also apply under family sponsorship after you get married. If she has a TRV she can apply in Canada class (inland) and would also be eligible to apply for an open work permit. She can also opt to apply outland. With spousal sponsorship you would need to show proof that the relationship is genuine, which isn’t the case for economic streams.

I suggest you go through the guide and checklist before you decide which path to take.
