Hi all,

What would happen if my citizenship application is still in process when my PR comes up for its 5 year renewal? Am I just required to renew my PR card, or do I need to renew for PR status completely? Also, if it is just the card, it is required that I renew it if I have a citizenship application in process?

I have about 11 months left on my 5 year PR and with the current rate of things, I will likely still have my citizenship app in process by the time that comes around.

Thanks in advance!

Your PR does not need to be renewed as it does not expire (You still need to meet the residency obligations, of course). Only your PR Card expires and needs to be renewed if required.

It is not mandatory to renew your PR Card if you are in Canada, and have no intention of leaving. You only need a valid PR Card f you are outside Canada and want to return on a commercial carrier.

This is an excellent answer. In short, if you have no plan to leave Canada anytime soon, no need to renew.
