Can you renew your PR Card three months before it will expire? Can one renew the PR card as early as now? The PR card of my husband is due to expire on March 2017. Any input or experiences is very much related as a reply. Thank you. We are weighing our options so we can make the necessary decision whether to leave early or not.

yes but if you haven't met residency requirement you cannot. In order to apply 3 months before expiry you must have lived in Canada for 2 years or more.

Hi! Thank you for your prompt response. It has been a struggle to find an answer on here lately. He is able to meet the required number of days. But I have a couple of follow-up questions:

1. He is planning to renew his residency from outside of Canada and he does have a canadian address. Will it still be mailed there?

2. We are planning to go back to Canada this December 2016 and will be staying there until March 2017. Do you think it will be issued then?

3. If he was asked to pick up his PR card and he is out of the country, can he enter Canada with an expired PR card or should he apply for something so he can legally enter Canada?

hi, this is just my opinion, so do wait for confirmation

2. why do you think it might be an issue?
3. ithink he might have to apply for a travel document, if he is not from a visa exempt country. please check the government of canada site. maybe on FAQ.

I think you read my question number 2 wrong. I was asking if it's already possible that the PR card will be issued then?

So can he renew his PR card 9 months before it expires?

Where can he obtain this document so he can legally enter Canada with an expired PR card just in case?

He can't apply for renewal if his card is still valid for more than 9 months or 270 days.

It is currently taking 2-3 months for PR renewal. As he is residing outside of Canada, the processing time might be longer.

The card can only be mailed to a Canadian address. If he is requested to pick up the card in person, he will have 6 months to do so. If he doesn't pick it up within that time, the card will be destroyed. He will need to apply again and expect that the second app will face much more scrutiny.

Without a valid PR card, he would need to apply for a PR Travel Document.
