Hello everyone,

I am planning to renew my PR soon and was wondering what your advice would be on whether to apply online or by mail. Which option is easier? I will need to apply and then travel outside the country for a while, so I would appreciate your advice.

Thank you!

You want to apply and leave the country?. I would just wait to leave after you get the card which isn’t long at all.

I think online has more chances of being processed quickly. If you leave the country for a 'long' while, it may get delayed, especially if any question about your residency obligation. But if you are well in compliance and no other issues, you might get the new card back quickly.

Whatever you decide: strongly recommend returning before your current PR card expires.

I have met the physical presence requirement. I need to leave for my job, but I am applying 9 months before my current card expires. Thank you for your response. I will then proceed with the online application. Do you think I can initiate the process in the system now and submit it later when the time is right?

I do not know, nor what you mean by 'the time is right.' As I said, if you leave right away after applying, it might get delayed - as they wait to see if you return - but may depend on other factors too.

Thanks! I meant, can I start adding the supporting documents, like IDs, to the portal even though I plan to apply at the end of March? I will be traveling to the US and returning to Canada for short visits to check. Usually, the process is online, and I can track the progress there, right?

I don't know about that specific portal - some (like citizenship) will only keep profiles for 60 days or so.

My understanding is that the PR card renewal updates are extremely limited (in notifications and utility). YMMV. But some get new cards in renewal before the portal even updates, I think.

Hi. I applied for my PR renewal in the last week of October through the online PR portal. The processing time since then has gone down from 50+ days to ~30 days. However, it seems my application has not begun processing yet. There is no AOR and no application status change. I have met the RO but it's around 780 days. Could this be causing any delay in my application? Has anyone else been in this situation recently?

Hi,
How did you manage to link your application with GC Key? Did you receive your application number from IRCC through helpline?
