PR Card renewal of minor

My son, having PR, is staying alone in Calgary with a family acting as his Custodian (for Schooling purpose). In Aug 2016, his PR is due for renewal. And he becomes 18 (Adult) in January 2017. For renewal of PR card of Minor, there is a complicated process of preparing Legal Guardianship form in Canadian Court. I understand that once he is major (Adult), he can apply himself. Can he wait till Jan 2017 to apply for his PR card renewal ? If yes, will there be any issue to stay for few months with expired PR card ?

Appreciate your expert comments. Any other problems that could be there because of this ?

if he doesn't travel abroad, he can stay with an expired card in Canada as long as he likes.

But can he renew his card himself without the need to signature of parents/Guardians after he is 18 ?
