Our PR card expires in Oct 2012, i landed in canada in 2007 and returned after 12 days. means i was not there for 2 years. I can enter again as Visa exempt category and stay there for 2 years to regain PR. my question, during this 2 years period will I be able to do work as PR and my children will be able to get school admission and health card etc.

Yes. Because mine was expired in 2011. And I,even bought,a house for job sin card n driver's licence is enough id. For health card u need proof of address. About school I m not sute but wait for senior replies. My answer is based on the fact that,u might already have the sin n health card. I mean not first time.
For health cards check the website of the Ministry of Health in the Province you are/ intend to reside in where you will get details of documents required and steps to take to be registered e.g Ontario has OHIP. Some provinces e.g. Ontarion have a waiting period when you return to Canada so you will need private insurance till for this time. For schools again check the Minsitry of Education site...msot provinces have a board of education that deals with this. Your COPRs will suffice as proof of PR status.
Corp is confirmation of your,pr card or your landing paper can be,used for same purpose. Personally,i,have never been asked for pr n if I guess I had to show it to bank once only as I didn't have my driver's liscence at that point I already,had answer in mind in,case if they would have asked that ya,its expired but I m planning to renew it soon as I just needed as a proof of id but nothing serious. But they didn't ask anything just checked the name that's it N,for ontario once,you are in wait period for health card is three months if you are coming wth kids you can buy visitor's insurance the mean time to be on the safe side from manulife or any other insurance company.
Just to let you know pr staus n pr card are two different things. Expired pr card doesn't mean you lost your status as permanent residence. Unless n untill immigration decide for you that u r no longer permanent resident.
So technically no one,whether bank, your job or any other department have to go through that n tell u,"oh by the way u over stayed so u are no longer pr." Because it's not their job to determine ur pr status it'simmigration's job. They just need two pieces of id mostly for job n bank so you can show ur passport n sin card n later on your,driver licence. I was also thinking the same way before coming to canada but don't worry once they let u in without any objections at airport then u can live till 730 days n they renew your pr card. Best of luck.

In most of Canada airports since november immigration was setup new devices which incoming passengers are divided into two groups visitors and PR/Canadians.. they go in two different lines/direction. The later group follow 3 simple procedures check in 1 scan yr PR card and 2. Scan customs form which normally filled in the plane and then 3. show your identity papers Passport and PR card and copy of cutoms card which the machine automatically gave you when you scan to an officer who is standing infront of the line.. If he/she is satifies she/he lets you pass if not she/he asks some simple questions regarding residency.. .how long you have been away/.. if not satified yr asnwers transfers you an immigration office where they check everything even their records and might ask you to come back for mroe check ups..
If you are in the other group which you claim Visitor (whether visa exempt or not) then you go normal process and see an immigration officer in a normal cage who will scan your passport and if the computer shows that you are PR then you need to pray a lot.. cause they think that you are mis-interpretting residency obligations.. Hope that your passport is not the one you were landed with when you become PR. In that case you may have a chance provided that the system does not have information recorded against that passport.. I am not scaring you but this is what happens /reality now..
