PR Card Expired

Hello all,

I would like to seek advise on the following,

The CIC website states the following about "What happens if my permanent resident card expires while I am outside Canada?"

Private vehicle

There are other documents you can use to re-enter the country.

When you return to Canada, apply for a PR card if you plan to travel outside Canada again.

Some examples of private vehicles include, but are not limited to: a car, truck, motorcycle, or recreational vehicle that you own, borrow, or rent. It is a vehicle not available for public use.

Can anyone explain what does other documents include. I could not find the list of documents when I clicked the link to other documents.

Thanks

Your landing document i.e. your signed COPR can be used to gain entry to Canada in a private vehicle.

Technically all you need is a passport to be identified as a PR if travelling by car from the US. Having a COPR or expired PR card will help CBSA to confirm your PR status quicker but is not essential.

Of course if you don't meet the residency obligation, then even if traveling by car you run risk of being reported and starting process to revoke your PR status.

Thank you all for taking time to respond. What kind of queries one can expect at the border, for someone not met the RO. while crossing the border by private vehicle.

You will be asked how long you were outside Canada. He asked me below questions:
Where do you stay now? (which city in US) How long were you staying?
Where did you stay before that? How long was that?
Total how long you are in US in the last few years?

Officer will note these detail in a yellow slip (for me it was yellow). You will be asked to go to secondary inspection.
Once inside secondary inspection office, I was asked the first question as "How are you maintaining your PR - residency obligation?"

FYI to All,
Dont worry if you are meeting residency and sent to secondary inspection as the officers at the booth sometimes ask wrong question or not knowing if you are exempted/met residency or not checking records properly from the date of PR.
For me, I recently got PR but still was sent to SI without even checking the records. So just tell inside the SI office that you recently received PR or meeting residency and they will clear you in few mins.
I was not sent to SI when i showed the COPR during the first few times but this time i showed the PR card and he thought i was not staying long enough in Canada.

Thanks Hariraj Mohan. But in my case I have not met by 730 days residency obligation and I would like to move to canada. My PR card is not valid. Will the officer allow me to enter.

A PRTD is only required if returning by commercial carrier. Those crossing by land in a private car or by foot don't require one.

You will be allowed to enter. However, CBSA may report you for not meeting the RO, which will lead to proceedings to revoke your status. If you are reported, unless you have H&C grounds for not meeting the RO, you would lose your status. If you aren't reported, you will need to remain in Canada for 2 straight year to meet the RO.
