Hello everyone I have a question about Residency obligations..... My wife's PR card expired in 2012 and we are wanting to move back to Canada in July of this year, I am a Canadian Citizen and so is our son but she is not and we are afraid that she will not be aloud back into the Country! We have been out of the country since 2008 and therefore she did not meet her residency obligations but I have read that as long as she has been accompanying a Canadian Citizen it is as if she was in Canada? We are living in Portugal and do not need a visa to enter Canada but since she has an expired PR card I was wondering if it is really necessary to fill out travel document application even though we are from a country which does not need a visa to enter Canada? Also will she be allowed to enter Canada with just her expired PR card? Thank you in advance for the help!!!

If she has been with you this entire time living out of Canada, then yes, she will qualify to renew her PR card. She can not do this however until you are back in Canada. You should use the visa exempt passport to enter Canada, if they ask, show them the expired PR card and inform them that you have been living as a family outside of Canada since 2008 and were unable to renew her PR card due to that fact. Because you are a citizen all should be fine and there should be minimal hassle. Once back inside Canada, get all the documentation you need to prove you were together outside of Canada together this entire time and apply for her new PR card.

OK, thank you Alurra71 for the feed back..... So you think that she won't have any problems getting back in. Do you still think we should apply for a travel document or not needed?????
