I have a question regarding PR card renewal and citizenship.

I have become permanent residence in Nov 2010, my PR card expires on Jan 5,2016 .
Here's the thing : I had to leave Canada and come back again so I will be spending 740 days until April 2015;
1) Can I apply for PR card then?
2) if I renew my PR card, am I supposed to spend another 1095 days to apply for citizenship? or can I count from 740 to 1095?
I had to go back to study so I can get accepted in UofT :( :( :( I just found out that I may not be eligible to apply for citizenship!!! :-[ :-[

You can not apply to renew your PR card in April 2015 because it still has more than 6 months to expire. You can apply to renew only when it is 180 days or less from expiring so in mid-July 2015 or later and you can apply as long as you have 730 days in Canada or more since you landed but within the past 5 years.

The requirements for citizenship are not connected in any way to the PR card periods so if you have spent 1095 days in the past 4 years, regardless of whether it is time to renew your PR card or not, you can apply for citizenship.

However, immigration is about to change the citizenship requirements so in the future, you will most likely need 4/6 years in Canada to apply or 1460 days in the past 6 years rather than 1095 in the past 4.

I am Canadian PR card holder. I havent completed 2 years here as i was pursuing my MEDICAL studies in INDIA which is of 5 and half year duration. I got the admission before i got my immigration. So i continued my studies there and have returned back to canada after completing my studies and planning to do further studies here. Will this be the valid reason for applying for the renewal of my PR card on compassionate grounds? Awaiting the rply.. Thanks

Unfortunately studying outside of Canada is not accepted as an H&C reason for failing to meet the residency obligation. You should try to return to Canada before your PR card expires and then remain in Canada for 2 years without leaving to meet the residency obligation before applying to renew your PR card.

Thank you for your rply. If i do so ,wouldnt i be liable to the query that why am i applying for the renewal so late?

No. There is no law that requires a PR to renew their PR card immediately.

I have read it at the site from where i downloaded the renewal form that one must renew within 6 months after expiry. Can i ognore this statement and continue living here?

Can you link to that please?

There is a rule that says you can not renew earlier than 6 months before expiry. There are no rules about how long after expiry you can renew as far as I know.

Oh yes.. I have gone through it again.. It said the same as u have explained .. Thank you so much for the valauble advice.
