Hello everyone,

My wife & I, have received got the final PPR and now planning to make a short landing at Toronto during the end of October, 13-14 days.

I understand that, in order to return to India, we would have to apply for Travel documents.

I would request you to kindly give your insight /advice regarding the following points:-

1) When do we need to apply for Travel documents? is it right after landing in Canada?

You cannot apply for travel documents from within Canada. If you are doing a soft landing and you will be moving out of Canada before you receive your PR card and you want to return to Canada without a PR card, you must apply for PRTD (Permanent Resident Travel Document) at the Canadian Embassy/High Commission in the country that you have traveled to.

Check this --> http://www.cic.gc.ca/english/information/travel-document/

2) How much time does it take to get the Travel documents? we have just 9 working days in hand..is that sufficient?

No Idea. May be someone else can help with this.

3) I am booking a return flight from India to Toronto, will that be of any problem while I arrive at the landing airport?

What do you mean by "problem"? What kind of problem are you anticipating here?

4) How much does it take to get the SIN?

You can get one at the airport itself. Alternatively, you can get from a Service Canada center as well.

Thanks & regards,

Sourav

Hi Rajkamal,

Thanks a lot for your valuable insight.

We are planning to give the authorities a local address (of one of my friends) for sending the PR card,so that my friend can mail the same to me when I am back in India. Based on what you have told, I don't need a travel document unless I plan to visit Canada again in the meantime, before I receive the PR card. Am I correct?

Regarding the problem that I was anticipating with respect to 'return tickets', my point is, if the authorities at the landing airport find that we have landed there with a return ticket for my home country, can they ask questions about that or ask us to cite reasons (as in why do we want to return without getting PR card)?

Also, can you tell me whether staying in Canada with 7 working days in hand, would good enough to finish all the basic formalities in the initial days?

Regards,

Sourav

If you are questioned, you can always tell them that you are going back because of XXX (Personal Commitments/Sale of a land/sale of vehicles/settling bank accounts etc) and you will definitely be back by XX. But, I wonder why the officer would look at your tickets in the first place. All he needs to see is your PP/Visa and COPR. Not your airline tickets. Unless and otherwise asked, do not tell the officer anything about your trip.

Also, can you tell me whether staying in Canada with 7 working days in hand, would good enough to finish all the basic formalities in the initial days?

Yes - you can apply for SIN and open a bank account. Wouldn't need 7 days for that :D . You can walk around the place and begin getting familiar with the new society around you.

Hi guys,
Five working days and counting since the passport submission, and no movement yet. Should I be freaking out?

No. I submitted my passport two days back..and asked them how long would it take for stamping....10 days is what I was told. But the lady also mentioned...it could take longer.

Ah, alright. I mean, reasonably speaking, five working days is nothing lol. I guess I just have a compulsive need to worry!
