Hi,

Myself and my partner are in the very stressful position of being about to apply for Permanent Residency (for me) and I wanted to reach out and see if we could get any advice, tips or just plain words of encouragement on how to handle our application and everything that goes with it!

A quick introduction to us:

I (the applicant) am British. At the age of 21 I got myself a Working Holiday Visa and went to live in Canada for 2 years. In this time, I fell in love with both the country and my soon to be wife.

We met in Québec where she is from and we lived together for a period of a few months before my visa expired and I had to return to the UK.

She then applied for a similar visa to what I had in Canada, but for the UK so that she could come and join me. We’ve been living together in various locations in the UK since then, about 6/7 months.

We’ve now decided to get married here in the UK and apply for Permanent Residency for me as soon as our marriage certificate comes through, which will be early next month.

We’d be applying via Spouse Family Class.

Is there anything we can sort out in advance?

Does anyone know how much more complicated the Québec procedure is and if we can do anything now to speed up the process? (I also speak French, which is a bonus)

We’ve decided to not hire a solicitor to help us with our application as we thought ours, hopefully, will be quite straight forward.

Any help at all would be greatly appreciated, we’re both feeling rather lost and anxious about the whole thing without having anyone to speak to.

Thanks again!

Yes, as we’re both now here living in the UK until I receive PR status and we can return to Canada together.

Her visa for the UK is due to expire Nov ‘19

How long were you living together in Canada and how long apart before she joined you in the UK as you may all ready be able to apply as common law?

Yes, we’d already looked into this and unfortunately we don’t meet the criteria due to the spaces in between and our living in multiple places, sometimes with only one of our names attached to the lease (when there even was a lease).

We do of course have evidence of our relationship going back almost 2 years now however, we’re not so worried about the proof side of things as our relationship is as genuine as anyone’s.

Hi

Just follow the guide and checklist. It is fairly straightforward. The Quebec part is not complicated, just another few forms to fill out.

Ok fair enough, just suggesting it in case you didn't know. Guess you can make sure you have any police checks you need ready, not sure what else you can do, make sure you use all the latest forms.
