Hi, I am in the final stages of receiving my PR visa. In the instructions for bringing items, it says that I have to complete the B4 lists. My wife and children are Canadian citizens and she will be sending all of our things from Ireland to Canada. So... is border control looking for a list of just my personal items or of all the items we will bring in the house move? She has rights to move her things without problems or will she have to complete forms for customs as well once they arrive in Canada?

When you move to Canada from another country, you may bring your personal and household goods with you without paying duty. But you will have to pay duty on any item you bring that has not been used. A duty is a fee that the government charges on some goods when they enter Canada.

You do not have to pay duty on:
•Antiques
•Appliances, such as a stove or refrigerator
•Books
•Clothes
•Furniture
•Hobby tools and other hobby items
•Jewelry
•Linens
•Musical instruments
•Private collections of coins, stamps or art
•Silverware
•Gifts (worth CDN $60 or less each)

You do have to pay duty on:
•Items you have leased or rented. The Canada Border Service Agency does not consider that you own leased or rented items.
•Items you have bought on your way to Canada
•Vehicles you plan to use for business
•Farm equipment
•Equipment you plan to use in construction, contracting or manufacturing

If you are unsure about whether or not you have to pay duty on certain items, bring sales receipts and registration documents with you.

I currently study on the same issue too. I found a web with very useful information.

Thank you for the helpful links. Still one thing to clear up. Are customs looking for my (the applicant) things to follow or for the entire family items? My wife and children are Canadian so they will already be there so I will only be landing with a few suitcases . Thank you if you could clear this up for me.

Your wife, as a Canadian citizen can 'import' all of your household possessions. You don't need to fill any B4 forms out. Just let them know your 'family' is returning to Canada and you are now immigrating and only the clothes you carry are your 'personal' effects. They will be fine with that. You will only need a B4 if YOU have a vehicle you intend to import that is only in YOUR name and not shared with that of your wife.

Re: PR applicant landing for short term only

Hi, I just received my papers and the date on which I have to land. I am going to land in Toronto alone (without wife and children)and for only 4 days. My wife and kids will return to Canada once the school year is finished in June. I am returning to Ireland to work until then. SO.... do i tell immigration the truth and that we only have a June/July date to return ? What about the B4 papers? I am only going with personal things for the weekend. We have a shipping quote for our personal things. Should I bring it alone as proof? Is there anyway they could refuse my entrance where I need to finish up a contract in Ireland first before making the move?
Thanks

i would be careful about sharing your plans unless they specifically ask you (which i doubt they will). there was a recent story about a person being denied landing because they said they were not planning to live in canada right away. the way i see it, it's better to be safe than sorry. keep the info to yourself unless they specifically ask you (otherwise you would be caught in misrepresentation). They will ask you for a canadian address upon landing for your PR card to be sent to. it must be canadian, so if you have family in canada, use that address. CIC will not send the PR cards out of canada.

if you will be shipping items over later, then you will need a B4 "goods to follow" form. that way, when you receive them later you won't run into issues with duties/taxes. it's best just to supply everything upfront at landing. if you aren't bringing anything over now, that's fine. again, to be safe have a goods to follow form ready to declare your items at landing.

Thank you. On the GTF B4 form do i list our family things to follow, including our household items, etc? My brother in law will be picking me up so i have the address where we will be staying. Will they ask me where my wife and children are? I dont want to lie or appear unclear but this makes me nervous. We plan to move together in June but my family will be in Ireland when I make the landing in February. As long as I have a B4 goods too follow list and a home address should i be ok?

they may or they may not, no one can tell you how the conversation is going to go that day, except for the usual landing proceedure. if your family are canadian citizens it doesn't matter - they aren't landing as pr's. and all you have to say is you decided to go first and they are meeting you later. i would keep the chit chat down to a minimum if possible. it's really none of their business, since they are canadians and none of you are doing anything wrong.

it will depend on what your wife claims as a returning canadian. as alurra mentioned, only YOUR goods need to be on the b4. if the rest are "hers", then i think she gets an exemption as a returning canadian. good luck!

Your returning Canadian wife may have to list all personal effects of her own and submit it to CBSA. I had to list all of my belongings to CBSA when I moved back to Canada at the border. Maybe it is because I told them that I have personal effects to take back at a later date. They told me not to leave the border until I list all the items. This is to prevent me to having to pay duties on my stuff after I moved back.

Your wife may not have to do this if she is taking all of her belongings and her belongings only with her on first trip moving back. If she has any more stuff to take back after entering, she will need to report this to CBSA and fill out the form.
