The Duration of some M.Eng programs and PGWP we get after graduating is very confusing... I have asked this question in several posts to several people, but no one gave a clear answer...
The duration of M.Eng programs in Universities like Western, Waterloo etc are like this,
* A Full-Time International student may complete the course in one year, and should complete all courses with in 2 academic Years, 6 Terms, So it's typically a one year program, and we should extend the length for our needs...
* So the duration of PGWP we get, is the duration we actually study. So if I take 4 Terms, 2 years (Taking both Summer semesters off) to complete my course, what would be the duration of PGWP that I am likely to get.

Can anyone Please give a clear answer and provide some information on this Topic... Many students have similar confusion.

ajosephhh :

The duration of the PGWP is determined by the period of study mention in your OFFER regardless of how long you actually take to complete the course. Example if a course is 1 year and you take 1 and half years to complete it because of some reason, it doesnt mean you studied for 1 1/2 years, it still means you studied for 1 year.

The statement saying should be taken with x number of academic years is to say this is the MAXIMUM time you can drag the course on.

Again correct me if im wrong but this is my understanding.

That's correct, but I contacted in the university's International office and asked them what would be the duration in the graduation certificate, They said it's the duration you study... So if i study for two years, 4 Terms (both summer terms off).. Which means i studied for 16 months... What would be the PGWP duration that i will get.... I have asked them this question, but no reply...

The duration of your study in which they mean the stated duration on the website or program... Not the ACTUAL duration... You should have asked them this question...

"...and by duration do you mean the actual duration or the duration that is stated on the program information.."

That would have answered your question...

You know sometimes i think.. if a Visa Officer were to look at this forum.. none of us would ever get a visa hahahahaha... everyone is intending to go and NEVER come back.. minus a few odd people

By the duration they mean, the actual duration we study, not on the program info or anything.... They have made that clear...

About the last para :).... Ya i too thought of it... There are possibilities of visa officer reading these... But I have no wish to settle there... I just want to take the money that i will be investing for my studies.... And all these are possible only if i get Visa...So lets look at the present... :)

1. You get PGWP for the course duration and total credit hours you complete. If you complete a 1 year course in 18 months, you won't get a PGWP for 18 months.

Yeah , its really the course duration that determines ones PGWP so one must double check ones course duration carefully and not make mistakes.

Hi Everyone,

I have got the offer letter from a public university in Canada...now i am confused about the length of work permit i will get after the completion of the course. According to my offer letter the length of the course is 1 yr 11 months and 24 or 25 days.

Now, its not mentioned specifically that its a 2 yr course but the duration is just short of 4-5 days from 2 yrs.
Earlier every one says i will get 3 yrs PGPW after this course but i doubt becz term of 2 yr is not mentioned anywhere.

Does this shortage of 4-5 days does not bother visa officers in giving me 3 yrs work permit or will i get the work permit for 1 yr 11 months and 24 or 25 days only....?

Please clarify my doubt.

Thx

I don't know why Canadian Universities are confusing international students so much with their course duration... Why can't they make it a 2 year program for full-time students like in the U.S...
I think it's always better to take a 2 year program...

1. Two years program is not a guarantee for a 3 year PGWP.

Why... That's what immigration rules are... 2 years and above, 3 years PGWP...
If you study in 2 years (minimum) program, you will get 3 years PGWP. If you accumulate your study from difference program then you must prove it. So the result will be uncertainty, depend on how you satisfy the CIC officer.

I show on the forum that a lot of people try gambling plan to take one year study then extend to other 1 year program with hope to get the 3 years PGWP. It will not as easy as they think. First when you extend your study you must submit extended study permit (you must satisfy the CIC officer that it relevance). Then, second, they must convince the officer that the total those 2 years are comply with the 2 years required to get 3 years PGWP.

Regarding your question how many semester for 1 year, the answer is 2 semester. So, if you attend 6 semesters in 2 years (you attend the summer semester each year). It can be calculate as 3 years of study. In US you can call it as sort semester.
