Post Graduation Work Permit Application

Hi Guys,

I have just finished my 4 year engineering degree from UBC Vancouver. I want to apply for a Post Grad Work Permit.

Now I know that 'traditionally' the applications are sent to Vegreville, AB and are processed there and usually involves a 30 day waiting period. However, my friend who finished his engineering degree from McMaster in Hamilton said that he was able to apply in person at the Canadian Consulate in Buffalo - and that the waiting period was essentially 1 day! :D

I was wondering if the Canadian consulate in Seattle has any similar arrangements like that? I know that there is a work-permit application form that you fill in for applications processed outside of Canada, so my question is: Can I apply for a post-graduate work permit in Seattle?

Please let me know guys!

Sincerely,

apple86 :)

Hello apple86,

Have you gotten answer(s) to this question yet? I am having the same question going on too about the post-graduate work permit.
I wonder if ; Can I apply for a post-graduate work permit in New York, New York City or the embassy at my country if origin?
Because I have to leave Canada to go to my brother's wedding in my home country.

If you have found the answer, please kindly tell me as well. I will be much appreciated of it.

Many Thanks,

Hi SupStar,

I had forgotten about that post.

In any case - I actually did not hear anything definitive from ANY of the consulates. There was a rumour cicrulating that you could get a PGWP from Buffalo, however that theory is still a rumour (I have not been able to confirm it).

I ended up getting it in Vegreville.

Now, if you have a valid study permit - I would suggest that you apply for a PGWP effective immediately, via Vegreville, and give your friend/family's address (in Canada). That way you can re-enter Canada under your 'study permit', and then by the time you return, you should have a PGWP waiting for you.

Hope this helps!

Cheers,

Hi apple86,

Thank you so much for your response I really appreciate your answer.

I actually will finish all my final exams on Mid December 2011. I went to talk with my department about issuing a letter of
confirmation I have completed the program. Then , my study permit will finish in Dec 30. So, I have like only 2 weeks to apply
this PGWP online. My school told me to apply online , not the mailing app. But when I see the processing time in cic.gc.ca website It takes like almost 2 months to mail to my house in Canada which will then be FedEx by my roommate to my home country (like I told you I have to go home to my brother's wedding, and I have to then, apply for TRV to re-enter Canada I calculate already it's like 3 months for sure until I have everything.

That's why I'm seeking another alternative for getting it faster. I called the Canadian Consulate in my country yesterday. If I can re-apply PGWP in my home country for a 2nd time after applying online. Because I am rather willing to pay twice than wait for 3 months.

Do you think it's possible? And I really wish to apply in Buffaloooooooo.

Thank you,

SupStar

Ho apple 86,

I'm sorry i forgot to mention the consulate general in my country told me they can't process PGWP for me because it is an open work permit. I only have to apply in Canada..... so, I have to wait really that long.

I was afraid that they would say that.

So you should just go ahead and apply online ASAP. The trick will be the whole TRV. You will need your PGWP in hand prior to obtaining your TRV.

Also, make sure you apply form within Canada. They will/can block access to the online applications if you try to access the site from a non-Canadian ISP.

All the best!

Hi applee86,

Thank you so much. Your information is really really helpful. I never thought about it at all. I mean the ISP proxy thingy that must be only access from within Canada ha ha ha. Yah, I actually have to do what I have to do, which is waiting more long.
And to wait and being actually hold a PGWP on hand before applying TRV.
Now my to-do-list is to do everything according to the time line.

Again, Thank you so so much. Good luck to you! I wish you a happy successful in your career endeavors!
