The same thing happened to me as welll, normally when there is an update, I would get a email from CIC saying that your application has been updated, but this time I didn't get any email. I assume someone looked at the application or did something to it?

it usually means that they may have started to work on your application. if you check the various status on the application, like 'review of eligibilty' it will read 'we are reviewing you eligibility'. so an update means one of those statuses have changed.
