Post-graduate work permit... is it an open work permit without LMIA requirement?

Hello guys,

I think getting a post-graduate work permit by attending one year diploma program can be a good option for me.

Once I graduate and get a post-graduate work permit, can I get any job without LMIA? Is it just like a working holiday visa (open work permit)?
or do I need a positive LMIA to get a job during this period?
I've read that a positive LMIA is very hard to get and I wish to avoid it at all cost.

Also, once I work one year with a post-graduate work permit, can I apply for CEC EE?

The pgwp is an open work permit so you don't need an LMIA to start working.

Some candidates in the EE pool have received invitations to apply for PR without a job offer.

If your company/boss is willing to support your EE application and apply for an LMIA*, this could have a positive impact on your EE score provided your employer is successful in obtaining an LMIA.

*Experts: is it possible for an employer to apply for an LMIA while the employee is on a pgwp or an open work permit?

I see... I don't have qualifying points to make an EE profile....

I have a good CELPIP score but nearly no work experience due to student VISA work restrictions.

It's a very bad idea to go for just a one year program if you eventually want to apply for PR. A one year program will only get you a one year PGWP and many people struggle to get the full year of experience on a one year PGWP to qualify for CEC. If you are serious about applying for PR, you should take a program that is a minimum of two years so that you qualify for a three year PGWP.

Not true.
I already found employers who have pre-approved LMIAs.

If I fail to get full one year of skilled work during PGWP, I will get a work permit by obtaining a job offer with LMIA.
It will easily extend working hours but I really don't think I will fail to get one year of work during PGWP because I already have employers with LMIA who can hire me right away.

Scylla's recommendation is, in general, good advice. If you have other options (unlike the many many people who complain on this board about not being able to find LMIA-approved employment), by all means, go for it!

I assume that since you're not pursing the available jobs at this time, you really want the education and credential, so go for it.

Yes, I understand...

I actually don't need that education credential. If I think carefully about it...

so, what is required for Canadian Experience Class?
Is it just LMIA work permit and 1 year of work in Canada with good CELPIP score????
Will I be able to get a PR right after 1 year of work in Canada as long as my employer has LMIA?

How long does it take to get a PR after submitting CEC EE?

Well, the work has to be classified as skilled (NOC O, A, or B)

Also be aware that there may be changes this year under the new government about eligibility criteria

You will be able to submit an EE profile after gaining 1 yr of work experience. Then wait for an invitation to apply (ITA), then apply, then wait for processing...

Depends on your score how long it takes to get an ITA. if you get one, and submit a complete CEC application, then... it's hard to say. CIC/IRCC's goal is to process most applications within 6 months, but there are certainly plenty of people on this board for whom it is taking longer...

Some options for you to apply for PR are:

- To get a Canadian degree/master. I strongly recommend, a Scylla did, a 2 years degree which allows you for a 3 years PGWP (work permit).

With only 1 year degree you'll get 1 year PGWP, that could be not enough to get a valid 1 year experience for CEC and, most probably, you'll be not able to work for a while (or even stay) after PGWP when PR was processing.

As somebody said it's possible to get a LMIA WP anytime, which allows you to get PR easier but could be hard to get one depending of your experience, Job and economic situation.

Please note currently PG applying for EE CEC are having lots of problems to get PR due to the low score, this could be as per Inmigration Minister declarations; of course a LMIA grants you 600 points so are good enough for PR.

Only NOC 0, A or B experience qualifies for CEC.

- To get a job LMIA WP based. If WP is for two years (NOC 0, A or B), you'll qualify easily for EE CEC and (with current rules) you can get PR before your WP expires.

If WP is for only 1 year you could qualify but could be more complicated (likeep with 1 year PGWP).

Note that toy can get fired anytime, have working hours reduced, take non-paid leaves or something else, and don't be able to meet CEC requirements.

Nowadays is harder to get a LMIA WP but still being possible, depending on your experince and job sector.

- If you have experience and proper education you could meet the requirements for FST or FSW and be able to apply right now.

I recommend you to create a EE profile and see how many points you get.

<400, hard to get PR, try to improve score
400-450, not too much chances to get ITA, but you could get a Ontario PNP Invitation or similar.
>450, you have good chances to get Invitation to apply.

My recommendation:
1. firts fill EE profile out and see
2. Looks for LMIA jobs
3. In the meantime get College acceptance to be able to apply for student permit (you can work partial time and full time within school breaks). A 2 years degree is the best option. Note college is really expensive for international students.

Look on this forum and CIC website to get more information about your options and details about PR applications

Congratulations. You're in the minority. It doesn't change my advice.
