Post Graduate Work Permit and Spouse Open Work Permit Extension

Hello everyone!

I'd appreciate assistance with the following situation.

I currently have a valid study/work permit that expires in August 1st 2020. Right now I am working as a Co-op student as part of my post graduation program at the college, and my wife has the Open Work Permit valid until August 1st 2020 (same day as mine).

Could somebody help me with some questions below, please?

• Once I receive the graduation letter from my College, will I need to find a permanent job in the NOC level to extend my wife's Open Work Permit visa?
• Does it necessarily need to be a permanent role? Can this job opportunity be a contract position?
• Can I work before applying for the PGWP? Or I should stop working and only get back to work once I apply for the PGWP, since I'd have a tracking process number(or similar)?
• Can my wife work after I get my PGWP?

I know that I have a lot of questions, but I need to know what steps should I take after I wrap up this Co-op job, and apply for my PGWP...it is quite confusing to me.

It doesn't need to be permanent.

You can work part-time after you finish your studies until you receive written confirmation of program completion. You then have to stop working until you apply for a PGWP, at which point you can work full-time.

Your wife can only work beyond her current work permit expiry if you have a skilled job and 3 payslips so she can apply for an extension.

So as you said above, If I'm able to find a contract position (let's say a 6-month contract), as long as this positions is a skilled one, and I can provide 3 payslips, will she be able to extend her Open Work Permit?

If you have 3 pay slips for your skilled job, yes.

thank alot for your advise. my university`s international student office gave me totally different advise which makes lots on stress for me. they told me that your wife should quit her job after her open work permit expired and stay with visitor status until you gain a 3 pay slip whit your new status of PGWP. can you give me any reference from CIC, i did not find any think regarding my specific situation. many thanks

There is no reference. If you were required to submit payslips from after you already have a PGWP, that would be CLEARLY stated. It isn't because there is no such requirement.

There is no point in including a payslip from a former employer. You can try applying with less than 3 payslips or wait.

Also note that as you have finished studying but have not applied for a PGWP yet, if you are working full-time, you are working illegally.

You are wrong. A co-op work permit is only valid for actual co-op terms. It cannot be used just to work off campus.

About the Co-op/internship, what I mean is that sometimes it happens that you finish all courses from your college program before the expected date of graduation, and then you have free time to complete your internship working full-time. Let'say that my expected graduation date is May 2020 and I deliver all assignments by the end or March 2020, pending the internship only. Then I have time to go for an internship and work 40 hours a week until I complete the mandatory hours of internship for my program, let's say, 120 hours internship, which would be something around one month work.
