Hello,

I started my master Degree in Computer Science in January 2013 and will most likely finish it by April 2014 (3 Terms / 16 months).
The master program is usually 2 years / 4 terms ( according to the offer of admission from the university ), but i could finish it in 3 terms.

My question is: is this case will I get a 3 years post graduate work permit since my study permit and offer of admission state 2 years program or I will get 16 months since I will be completing the master in 16 months?

Please advice.

Thanks

As I've seen some cases, you usually will get equal or less that the duration of your visa permit! this means if you have 2 years visa, you would get 2 years or lower not 3 years.
When you finish your course, you must inform the immigration 1 week after your studies finish.(if I'm not mistaken). This means the respected VO will see how long have you spend for your studies and according to that, they will issue you WP. This means, you might get 24 months(unlikely), 12-16 months (most likely). Hope it helps.

Hi,

You are in which university? By saying that you will complete 3 terms in 16 months.. are you implying that you will take 3 terms/ 12 months of actual study and 1 term break, and complete the programme in total 16 months?

Now, PGWP also depends upon the number of credits / course load you take. Different universities may have different rules pertaining to credit system, but full‑time students in Canadian universities... normally take 30 credits during the Regular Session – Fall and Winter or 15 credits/term. That makes.. 60 credits for a 2 academic year/ 4 term course. It can be slightly more or less. Now, a 2 Acd. years/4 term/Sem programme can be completed continuously in 16 months or in 20 months (with 1 term/summer term break) or in 24 months (by taking 2 summer term breaks). So.. if you complete your full course/ credits, of a 2 Acd. year Master's/ 4 term programme as mentioned on your offer letter, then even if you pace up your studies and complete all credit requirements to finish the programme in 3 terms, still.. it will be considered that you completed a full time 2 Acd. years/ 4 terms Master programme. And, Hence... you SHOULD be eligible for a 3 years PGWP. So you need to see the Master's programme credits and programme description and general university guidelines to check if it's actually a 4 term/ 2 Acd. years Master programme with near 60 credits or more, and also ask around your seniors, university international office, others.. as to what is the realistic scenario regarding PGWP with past students who may have completed the course in less than 4 terms.

Hope it helps.

As Far As I Know (Cause I had this Exp).

If the course is not a 2 year Course (i.e, Min time - 2 years, 4 sems), and the course is like "You may complete in one year and must complete within two years. Then you will get PGWP as the university mentions in the letter to CIC. So you should ask the university in detail about this issue
So I asked two universities regarding this,
1. UWO strictly told me that in the letter to CIC, they will provide the course duration as 1 year only no matter how long we study. So we get only 1 year PGWP.
2. Waterloo informed me that, in the letter to CIC, they will provide the course duration as the actual duration we study. So if we study for 3 terms, we get PGWP for 3 terms - 12 months only.

And in Universities like Concordia, Mcgill. They have 2 years master's program. So 3 years PGWP is assured.

Thanks everyone for your reply.

I m in the University of Ottawa, so if anyone have experience with this specific university and their PGWP, please feel free to share your input.

Here is what is written exactly in the offer of admission and Study Permit respectively:

"A master's program normally requires two (2) years of study"

"2 Years Master Program"

another question is: Do you get PGWP for the number of months that you studied or the length of the study as a whole. for example, if you study from January 2013 til Jan 2014 and have a summer break. will you get a work permit for 1 year or 8 months ( 4 months winter + 4 months Fall )?

I have completed 24 months of full-time studies in Canada in 3 different degree programs in the last 3 years and none of the programs length was more than 9 months. Those were different graduate certificate programs that I have successfully completed. I am planning to apply for the PGWP. Do you think I will get it for 3 years ?

Yes. You will get 3 year work permit. Your work permit depends upon the duration of your stusy programme that means what has been written in your offer letter. If your offer letter says it is 1 year course irrespective 2 or 3 semester. You will get work permit for one year. If your second courses' offer letter bears that it 1 year course, then total duration becomes 2 year which will result in 3 year work permit. But, you have done 3 courses, you should be give 4 year work permit Lol . Do not worry you will definitely get PGWP having duration 3 year.
