Police Verification Question

Hi All,

I was looking for some clarity on the requirements for Police certificate. Below is the information listed on the CIC website:

Our online system will ask for a police certificate for:

• you and your family members who are 18 years or older

and

• every country you (or a family member) stayed in during the last 10 years for 6 months or more in a row

You don’t need to give us police certificates for any period of time before you were 18 years old or for time spent in Canada.

My questions are:

1. Today being March 11, 2019....10 years ago would be, March 11, 2009. I lived in Lagos, Nigeria from 2004 to April 2009. Do I still need to get a police certificate from Nigeria for my PR application?
* I was born in Dec 1991 and turned 18 y.o. in Dec 2009.

2. My husband has been living in Canada since 2014 as a international student. Does he need to get Canada Police Certificate?

1. Technically no. But if for some reason the system asks you for one in the document upload page, do provide it. But normally it shouldn't ask you. Do note however that officer/agent have full discretion in asking you for one if he/she deems it relevant to your application.

Thank you very much for the clarification. I am trying to figure out in advance what I need and preparing for it so that I don't have to spend too much time after I receive ITA to gather documents

Good call.
But like I tell everybody, when it comes to PCC, it's safer to get one anyway, just in case you are requested during processing of your application. Like I said, they have full discretion, and some people got bad surprises of PCC requests, and not enough time to acquire them.
