You need to apply through passport seva official website. There will be a fee of INR 500. You will be issued PCC on same day. Just walk in to your regional passport office with original passport.
If you have stayed more than 1 place/ your passport address is differ from current address , then it will trigger a police verification. If you walk into the Regional passport seva centre, where passport is issued, you will get it hassle free, else timeline is not predictable. :-X
5 places... God it will take iternityI suggest you to go website of your city police (for exam: Delhi Police). They clearly mention how to get PCC. Not sure about getting PCC through passport seva.

Easy way to get PCC is through Passport Seva Kenrda.
However, If you have stayed in more than 1 place, you have to avail PVC( (Police Verification certificate) from each of the mapped Police ststaion in whcih u have stayed.
The good thing is that Canada FSW does not ask for last 10 years PCC or PVC.
So, the current place where u r staying (Suppose from last 2 years), the PVC will be received from the mapped Police station, subjectyou get a PVC from previous place of stay and so on.
For Example:
from 1-Jan-2012 till date: Ahmedabad
From 1-Jan-2011 to 30-Dec-2011: Surat
From 30-June-2007 till 30-Dec-2010: Banglore
Now, to get PVC of 3 years from Ahmedabad police station, u have to get clearance certificate from previous city (Surat) and to get PVC from Surat you have to get PVC from Banglore and so on.
In Nutshell, it is advisable to get PCC as per the address mentioned in passport.
Suppose, u have your native address in ur passport but due to wrok u r in different city, ensure u get your PCC from your residence city and not from where u r working or else PCC will not be possibles.
