I am in process of applying to CIO. I have some questions about police certificates. I would really appreciate if somebody can help.

1. When is the right time to apply for police certificates? CIO takes usually 60-7 days to reply back and then we 120 days to apply to visa office. If i apply for pol certs just before i apply to CIO, they might expire before i could apply to visa office. If i apply after i hear back from CIO, it might be too late. Please advise.

2. Other than state clearance certificate from India, do i need any other police cert?( For US, i will be getting both state and federal but not sure about India)

Thanks in advance.

1. Police certificates are valid if they are dated within 3 months of the date that you applied to the CIO.
2. You only need the FBI certificate from the US, if state ones are required, CIC/CHC will tell. FBI certificates are taking quite awhile, you better apply now.

Thanks PMM and mtlguy.

1. Do PCCs expire at any time? Lets say i applied within three months before i apply to CIO, for how long these certs will be valid? Any idea.
2. How do i get PCC for India? If i need to submit an application to Indian embassay here, will i be submitting my original passport or notorized copy of passport?

@mtlguy: Did you send your application package to Buffalo Visa Office without the PCCs?

Please advice.

Regarding the validity of the PCC's...if you already have your PCC's...while filing the federal application the PCC's should not have been issued before 90 days. If you are filing your application and waiting for your PCC's...you can wait and get all your PCC's and mail it together to Buffalo. Does that give you a better idea? I myself was a little unsure of the validity of the PCC until a humble soul provided me with the answer.

Yes, my application was sent to buffalo without the PCC's. Per my lawyer for CSQ applicants its acceptable...not sure if its the same for FSW and other AINP applicants...senior members can shed some light regarding this question.

For PCC from India you need to apply to the nearest Indian High commission...i sent my application to Ottawa. VFS told me that copy of passports are required and original passports need not be submitted...thats for us in canada...i have read posts where applicants from US had to send their passports for PCC. I'd say, get in touch with the Indian high commission and get the answer.
