Police Certificate

Maybe I am blind or dumb or something else but I cannot figure out what exactly a police certificate is! It says on the Canada site it is from the FBI for US citizens but it also say 16 to 18 weeks and on the FBI site they call it Identity History Summary and say it takes like 30 days. Does any one have any insight on this? I am looking to sponsor my US fiance (husband in 24 days) to come to Canada. Any information would be great!

for US citizens, it is an FBI criminal background check. Do not go by information about this on the CIC site, as it is significantly outdated. What you read on the FBI site is accurate. have your husband follow the instructions for submitting an application for an FBI record here:

*note that CIC only considers FBI checks to be valid for 90 days, so make sure to time it with sending in your application. the expiration date is from the day it's received at CIC.

Thank you! I didn't know about the 90 day thing! So I want to get the back ground check in right before I send in his part of the application? After I am accepted as a sponsor?

I believe the date listed on the FBI record must be within 90 days of delivery to CIC, which is usually the "received by" date.

Thank you! So If I have everything ready to be sent in in September and I receive the background check in August or Sept I should be good! yay!

yes, def. attempt to time it as close together. i didn't know this rule whn i sent mine in, and i was biting my nails about whether it would be accepted. even ordered a backup. so far, no issues, and i just got decision made. fingers crossed!
