POE: Study Permit has a validity more than on my visa stamp

I have a question:

Can I ask the immigration-officer at POE for Study Permit has a validity more than on my visa stamp ?? ???

I mean if my visa for two years, Can the immigration-officer give me a Study Permit for two years and half at POE ?? :-[


So before my visa is going to expire and I still have a valid study permit, I will apply for a renew temporary resident visa

normally u dont ask anything at POE they issue u study permit based on ur admission letter or whatever is on file per CIC.....this does not mean u cannot try ..u can always ask. i however did not understand the reason for having study permit more than visa.....just to clarify visa is a document that lets u entry the country and study permit is the document which lets u live in the country legally both have different purpose. so lets say ur visa expires and ur still legally n canada having a valid study permit u can always continue to stay however if u leave canada then u will require a fresh visa to enter again.

Actually, my study permit expires the same month as the end month for course,but I want more time so I can apply for post graduate work permit (PGWP)

I must have a valid study permit when I apply for PGWP

Arent they supposed to issue a study permit for 90 more days than the duration of course.. I thot so.. I read sumwhere in this forum only..

Or maybe it was the TRV i guess.. The deal is u can stay a lil more than the course duration.. Now is it coz of study permit or the TRV dat more senior members cud guide...

Umair...thanks for detail reply...you know what I tried...I talked to visa officer at airport right after landing regarding expiry of visa the same month of ending my course and requested to extend it atleast a month more...and he added 3 more months there...so no worries..it sorted out alhamdolillah...

YOu can ask for it, but a request of 6 months extra than speculated seems not right. Ask for 2 months, and as somebody mentioned, yes when you extend your study permit from within Canada, usually they add 90 days to what actually you need. For example, if your program is supposed to be over in next 6 months and you apply for an extension, usually they will renew it for 8 to 9 months. However when you apply from home country and reach at POE, they issue you the exactly the same ( and in fact at times they ask you, how long will your study be, at that time you can mention that though my study will get over by say September 2015, but then i would need 2 months extra on study permit because of all the process of getting grad certificate etc). But don't be rigid about it at POE, it's never an issue at all to get it extended from within Canada.

And if POE doesn't work out, you can always apply for one time bridge extension of your study permit, which allows you to have enough time to apply for post-graduate work permit. My friend did that, and it's very simple, just like renewing study permit. Your college/university International student services would be able to help you further if required. Hope this helps.

If visa-officer is accepted to extend a study permit, so I'll have a study permit (valid till December 2015 + 3 months) and the visa stamp on my passport will be same valid till December 2015 , Is this right ??
