what happens if the work permit expires before getting extension? do i have to leave the country?

as long as you have a PR application in process and you applied for BOWP, you are safe here in Canada, no need to be worried.

No, you will be on implied status. You can continue to work.

i do not understand this federal file processing system.
some of my friends who applied in august 2017 got their PPR already.
and some of march applicants are still waiting? this is frustrating, irritating, confusing and not fair!

Since your status is work permit, and your both BOWP and PR application are in the process you don't need to renew it. Once you got one of them you can go for renewing.
