i applied for visitor visa on 14th August and got confirmation email on 18th August and i have booked my airline tickets on 20th September from Australia. But i am worried that will i get the result before 20th September? What will happen if I don't get the results and processing time is 18 days from Australia and i am not permanent residence of Australia.

Unfortunately it's impossible for any of us to say if your visa will be approved on time. The processing times posted on the CIC web site are only estimates - it's quite possible for processing to take a lot longer. Generally speaking, we strongly recommend against booking airline tickets until you have an approved visa.

To answer your question, if the visa isn't approved by September 20th, you'll have to cancel or change your travel plans. You can't come to Canada until you have an approved visa.

When did the processing time start? On 14th of August when I submitted the file or on 18th of August when i got an email of confirmation?

Technically on the 14th. But it really doesn't matter that much - again, the processing times online really are just estimates. Hopefully processing will take only a few weeks for you - but possible it could take a couple of months.
