Hi everyone,

My name is Ngan Nguyen, I'm from Vietnam and currently studying in Finland. I got an internship offer to work for 6 months in Vancouver, Canada. It's an unpaid one and I have to take care of the visa process myself and they don't want to have anything to do with the Labour Market Opinion.

I have to apply it from Uk. I've read all the instructions they give but there is nothing saying about the work permit for an internship? Am I supposed to apply for the temporary work permit? And the information they give is so complicated that I'm not sure which categorize I belong to...

Does there anyone have experiences or knowledge about my case? I really appreciate your help !!!!!!

Thank you very much in advance!!!!

Kind regards,

Ngan

1. The employer needs a LMO for you to get a work permit.
2. From the FW 01 Manual

Examples of “work” include, but are not limited to:
• a foreign technician coming to repair a machine, or otherwise fulfil a contract, even when they
will not be paid directly by the Canadian company for whom they are doing the work;
• self-employment, which could constitute a competitive economic activity such as opening a
dry- cleaning shop or fast-food franchise. (A self-employed person may also be considered to
be working if they receive a commission or payment for services);
• unpaid employment undertaken for the purpose of obtaining work experience, such as an
internship or practicum normally done by a student.

Hi,

Thank you very much for your answer!!! I truly appreciate it very much!
I asked the company and they said that they won't apply for an LMO because it's a complicated and long process, plus I will just work there for 6 months (not for a longer time) under the practicum status.

Could you please help me out more?
- So it means, without the remuneration and commission, then I'm eligible to apply for a work permit without an LMO?
- What exactly the type of work visa should I apply for in order to do the practicum in Canada? (there are so many of them, I've been trying to differentiate them but still I am confused myself!). I tried to call to the Migrationexpert.com to ask, but they require a consultation appointment and fee :(

Once again, I really appreciate your help!!!

Kind regards,

Ngan

1) No - you still need an LMO. Even if there's no remuneration / commission.
2) You need to apply for a closed work permit. However you can't apply for a closed work permit without an approved LMO.

Thank you very much!

This news is so hard to take :(( So it definitely means that the doors to Canada is closed to me.... because the company is not willing to apply for the LMO for me.

Might there be any other options out there if you happen to know?
