Hello guys
I'm in so much stress my canadian wife sponsored me and I received my pr last year. Unfortunately our relationship did not work now she is saying she will complain to IRCc that I married her for pr which Is not true. Also we wrote in our application that we met on somebody's wedding party but we met online. Would this revoke my pr if she complains? All other information and the relationship was genuinely true other than the information on how we met. Please advice

Since you already have your PR, there's not much she can do. Yes, she can complain to IRCC, but it is entirely up to IRCC whether they will investigate or not. If it's clear that it's simply a case of her word vs. yours, you don't have much to worry about.

However, if she submits a complaint that is backed up by evidence, documentation, and objective facts, then IRCC may be more inclined to investigate. If you're saying that your relationship was genuine and there's no hard proof that it wasn't, then you shouldn't worry.

Hard proof would be things like emails/messages where you and her discuss the terms of your fake marriage. For example, if she submits a series of emails from two years ago where it's clear that you paid for her to marry you so you could get PR.. things like that.

Thank you. No she does not have any such evidence that proves our marriage was not genuine. Infact all the evidence shows it was a genuine marriage and we just did not get along even after trying hard to work on our relationship.
My next question is when I file for the divorce, it asks how we met. If I write the truth this time on the divorce application would it effect my pr status because it will contradict to what we said on my pr application?
Thanks again for all ur help

There is not much she can do , unless she has proof that the marriage was not genuine. You are a PR now and she can call and make a complaint but without a lot of evidence it will not hold up . why is she saying now that you married her for PR? To scare you into staying in a marriage that’s not working ? My suggestion is to contact your local newcomer center as they usually have counsellors there that can guide you and give you correct advice about your situation .
Wishing you the best of luck

No, nothing you write on your divorce application will impact your PR status.

No. Divorce is under different law (divorce act). It is outside the scope of immigration act and its regulation. As other said, even when she's evidence that the marriage was that of convenience, immigration office will use discretion either to investigate or not. You can consult a marriage counsellor/therapist closer to you.

It really pains me when I hear these stories about a sponsor threatening to call immigration . I have heard it so many times and it’s really awful. I am a sponsor and I would never even think of saying those words to my husband. If the marriage doesn’t work out , that’s for two adults to work through . I’m really sorry the OP is going through this but rest assured you are fine and this forum is here to help

It is a phenomenon that is common with immigrants. Sponsors always believe their sponsored persons/partners are still attached or at their mercy until they become citizens. The only tool they rely on is immigration threat, rather than facing any marital issues before them.

Think that in some marriages a person’s immigration status factored heavily in the choice of spouse. There may be other factors involved like dowries, family gifts, etc. There are also cultures where being a divorced person (especially woman) is not as accepted as it is in Canada. It can be a much more complex issue.

Yes but it’s still a horrible thing to threaten someone with. I do hope that the person asking for help, gets the help they need . I can’t imagine the fear some new immigrants feel when faced with this situation , it’s just awful to me sorry

This is why there is no longer a 2 year relationship requirement. To allow spouses in abusive relationships to leave. Unfortunately in many societies threats, abuse, etc. are tolerated. Lots of cases of people accusing each other of various things in other countries especially in countries where marriage is more of a business transaction where reputation, money and status is the most important.

Sponsors certainly do not always believe this. That is a small minority of sponsors and I would guess it is generally when marriages are arranged.

Not to scare me to stay in the relationship but she says when I kick u out of the country then you would realise a favour I did to you which is worth a million dollar. She wants me to pay her or give her full house under her name which we share 50/50.
