Hello Guys,
Please kindly help as usual.
I officially landed as a PR in Canada on the 23rd October 2009 and later went back to England on the 30th October 2009 just a week after because of my job as I was not sure of immediate job in Canada. Then I finally returned back to Canada permanently on the 21st Sept 2010 till date. And during the years in view, below are days of my absence in Canada on work/vacation.

1. 30th October 2009 - 21st September 2010 - about 340 days absence
2. 5th December 2011 – 16th January 2012.......Vacation.........41 days absence
3. 19th October 2012 – 29th October 2012........Vacation........10 day absence
4. 4th February 2013 – 6th March 2013........... Vacation........30 days
5. 6th January 2014 – 29th January 2014......... Vacation........24 days.
Total: Approximately.........445 days of absence

I was trying to calculate my eligibility for Citizenship application, but became confused with where to start my calculation. Should I start from 23rd/30th October 2009 or from 21st September 2010 when I finally returned back to Canada after about one year of absence? And what should I safely put as my reason for being away for one full year. Could this long absence affect my Citizenship eligibility?
I'll be glad if someone could kindly help me with the calculation to know when I'll be due to apply for citizenship. I am just confused with these whole thing. Thanks for helping as usual.

1. Under the current Citizenship Act you need 3 years of residence in the 4 years prior to application date (qualifying window) i.e. the magic number is 1095 days. Residence is not defined as physical presence in the act but if you want a straightforward application make sure you have 1095 days of actual physical presence (APP).

2. Any day in which you are a PR and present in Canada as at midnight in this qualifying window counts as 1 day of residence. This means on the days you traveled you normally ignore the departure date but count the return date. You need to take into account any entries/exits after midnight. Most applicants deal with this by giving themselves a cushion of days...you will see on the forum those applying on day 1096 all the way to 1200+ days.

3. Excel will work out the dates for you real quick.

4. Put your reason as the truth or else you are getting yourself into problems right from the get go.

5. In theory the absence should not be an issue but my rough math says that most of these days will/ have fallen outside the qualifying window and are irrelevant.

6. Best to apply asap if you qualify - things are changing (likely by this summer) on the residence requirements front as sure as there is snow this winter!

Looks like Msafiri has answered your question. I would suggest that you use this website to figure your questions out. Look at the very end of this page and click 'Start Calculation' and it is self-explanatory. You will need the date you became PR.

This being said. I do have a question (a simple one for Msafiri). If, Msafiri, can help me clarify my below question. I think I have the answer of it (thanks to some people here but your response will add value to it).

On May 24, 2011 at 9:30 pm we had a flight leaving Toronto enroute outside Canada.
We arrived before mid night Nov 19, 2011. Which one below is accurate for the 'absent from Canada' for filling the online residence calculator.

1) absent from May 24 - Nov 18
2) Absent from May 24 - Nov 19
3) Absent from May 25 - Nov 18
4) Absent from May 25 - Nov 19.

My best guess was: May 24 - Nov 18 - Is that accurate?

Hello Guys,
Thanks for your responses. I did the calculation. And as I put 30th October 2009 - 21st September 2010 being my first days/months of absence after landing. I got this message below.

An absence you have entered is partially or completely outside the relevant four-year period. Please check that the dates are correct.

I put in the exact day I left Canada and the exact day I returned back. I hope I didn't make any mistake?
Please help again.
Thanks,
Bethel7

Bethel, you should only go back (consider) four years from the date you will be signing your application... if you have any trips more than years ago (the date you will sign your application), ignore those ones and do not include them.. for example:

if you plan to send/sign the application on Feb 6, 2014... consider only trips between feb 6, 2010 - Feb 6, 2014... any trips before Feb 6, 2010 should not be included... i hope this helps.

Hello,
Thanks for the explanation.
Again, Can I apply for citizenship alone without my wife who left me years back?
I have not been able to file in for divorce because of the cost nor file in for official separation.
She vanished with our marriage certificate. In completing the Citizenship application, should I fill married or separated? For now I do not have any legal document to support both. What do you advice please?
Thanks for helping as usual.

You can apply without your wife. List your status as separated.
