Please help. Is there any chance for someone with the following circumstances to immigrate to Canada and get a PR?

- 50 years old from Russia
- Bachelor in Teaching English (completed 10 years ago)
- Bachelor in accounting (about 30 years ago)
- Have a sibling, parent and adult child in Canada. The sponsorship for Parents is currently closed so trying to see if there are other options

Thinking about studying Practical Nursing or some kind of Masters. Which is better? Especially at 50 years old is it even possible to be accepted to university/ college? And after studying is there any chance of getting PR through Express entry or other program? From what I've read it is better to have Masters cause that way having a 3 year PGWP would give more time to get more Canadian experience and more points for PR? On another hand worried about the new restrictions on PGWP and what if I do some Masters for example in Early childhood education or Administration and then they stop giving PGWP in that as it's not in the "field of study" requirement. Very confused on what to do. Please help and offer advise.

Thank you

At 50 not possible with current profile. Even taking a Masters and getting experience doesn’t guarantee PR. People in Canada now who are 30 with Canadian masters are not getting PR. No such thing as a Masters in ECE. Few employers are not going to hire an 55 year old in a skilled job. Also at 50, it will be very difficult to be approved for a study permit. At that age, you should be planning for retirement.

Economic immigration is not going to be a realistic path for you due to your age. You won't score enough points to be selected.

You need to wait for the parent sponsorship program to open up and for your children to apply and be selected.

Yes there is a Masters program in Early Childhood education at TMU. People have different circumstances and not everyone wants to retire at 50 years old as you said.

She is absolutely free to apply for a study permit and continue working. The challenge will be qualifying for PR based on her age through an economic immigration stream. The most realistic option is PGP.

It is not a Masters in ECE but Early Childhood studies which is not the same as ECE. Also you have an accounting degree so not eligible for program. Without a background in early childhood learning or a research background, you are not getting in.

A four-year honours Bachelor's degree from a recognized institution with a minimum B grade point average (GPA) in:

  • Early Childhood Education
  • Political Science
  • Disability Studies
  • Social Work
  • Child Development
  • Psychology
  • Child and Youth Care
  • Sociology
We will consider applicants from other relevant disciplines.

If you haven’t taken a course in research methods or do not have a background in research, we strongly advise you to take a qualitative or quantitative research methods course prior to entering the program.

She has a Bachelor in Accounting and she also has a Bachelor in Childhood Education and Linguistics, qualified to work in a school in home country. So probably she has the needed background for this Masters program

So this is a research-based Masters so she applies for it, and see what happens. As per above… If you haven’t taken a course in research methods or do not have a background in research, we strongly advise you to take a qualitative or quantitative research methods course prior to entering the program.

Assume it is a 4 year degree and she has ECA for it. Having the background doesn’t mean acceptance. She will want to talk to the school and see if they will accept the degree, language results and past experience. She will need the funds, paid tuition and justify costs of program with career advancement and promotion in home country. Show that she will make that much more when she returns. PR is not longer guaranteed for 30 year olds who have Masters degrees and Canadian experience so don’t plan on it for her. Good luck.

No, not everyone wants to retire at 50. But they will still be able to access a system that’s supported by paying into it . Health care, oas etc . And they don’t have many working years left , compared to lets says a 25 year old who wants to immigrate

The system favours the young in immigration, not the old .
It’s not just Canada . The scales are tipped in the younger immigrants, not older
PGP possibly , but right now the government is so unpopular can’t see them throwing more fuel on the immigration fire they’ve created by opening it up .
The votes they’d lose are negligible

Does she have a better chance if she knows French and goes into nursing? Healthcare seems to be in demand right now
What nursing program will she get acceptance? She needs to talk to colleges and universities about acceptiing a 50+ international student, and get a PAL too. Schools will not accept international students with large study gaps anymore because chances of study permit are almost NIL. Factor in a PAL too.

This is a program out of high school so she needs all the sciences. She probably would need to take a year first of prequisites, and for that she would need admission. She will be almost 60 by the time she is licensed. As for French, that alone is not enough.

She needs to be eligible for Express Entry, and her age will cost her dearly. Score will not be high enough.

Btw, her son (assume he has enough income) should consider to apply for her super visa. Once in Canada, staying for up to 10 years, who knows if she find a Canadian who enters a relationship with her and willing to be her sponsor for spousal sponsorship.
