Hello,

I'm just done with my post grad in Management and have no work experience yet. Since I want to settle in Canada, the only way out is to apply through the Skilled worker category in one of the 29 high demand occupations AFTER doing a 1 yr job in one of these occupations. Since most of these occupations are unrelated to my degree, I guess I can do a quick 1 year job in:

4152 Social Workers, because it wouldn't be that difficult to get employed as a social worker in organizations

1) Could someone enlighten me with the details of the "Social worker" category and how does the entry of occupations in the list works?
2) Would exact 1 yr work experience be enough?
3) My biggest concern is, what if I do this job for one year, and then when I go to apply, the category is no longer there?
4) When should I start working, considering the lists come out?

Thanks in advance!

4152 Social Workers, because it wouldn't be that difficult to get employed as a social worker in organizations

1) Could someone enlighten me with the details of the "Social worker" category and how does the entry of occupations in the list works? - learn to use Google, http://www5.hrsdc.gc.ca/NOC/English/NOC/2006/QuickSearch.aspx?val65=4152

2) Would exact 1 yr work experience be enough? - yes, but I don't think your will get enough point unless you know French very well and have a relative in Canada.

3) My biggest concern is, what if I do this job for one year, and then when I go to apply, the category is no longer there? - yep, that is the problem. You work for one year, earn the experience in that occupation and they (might) take it off the list.

4) When should I start working, considering the lists come out? - right now.

Hey, thanks a ton for the prompt response! :)

That link has something called "Employment Requirements" which mention the need of having a Bachelor's degree in Social work, which I don't. While this clearly means that I would not be able to get a "similar" job in Canada (which I don't intend to anyway), does this also mean my PR application won't be accepted too? I would obviously try to find a management-related job in Canada after going there.

2) Would exact 1 yr work experience be enough? - yes, but I don't think your will get enough point unless you know French very well and have a relative in Canada.
I did check the points requirement and I get exact 67 points with the 1 yr social worker work experience. But anyways, I would check that again, and if I fall short, I could always learn up French quickly. ;)

3) My biggest concern is, what if I do this job for one year, and then when I go to apply, the category is no longer there? - yep, that is the problem. You work for one year, earn the experience in that occupation and they (might) take it off the list.
Exactly, so what is the solution to that problem? Is there anyway to predict whether the category will still be there or not when I apply, say in May-June 2012?

Let's say that when the new list comes out this July 2011, the category of "social worker" is still there, do they accept ALL applications for that category until July 2012? Because if that's the case, I can be sure I would get in because I will work from May 2011 to May 2012, and quickly apply before the next list in July 2012!

1. That is the problem, how to convince immigration officer who would make decision on your application that you really 4152 Social Worker and you really have experience as 4152 Social Worker and you intend to get a job as 4152 Social Worker after you land in Canada.

2. ...

3. There is no way to predict for 4152 Social Worker. However, plumbers and electricians have been there always.

Wow..really? Does that mean i should give up on the "social worker" category..I mean, I will ofcourse have a 1 yr social-work work experience...but I don't have a degree in social work, but in management..it says:

A bachelor's degree in social work is required in Newfoundland and Labrador, Prince Edward Island, Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, Quebec, Ontario, Manitoba, British Columbia, Nunavut and the Northwest Territories. In Alberta, a bachelor's degree or diploma in social work is required. In Saskatchewan, a bachelor's degree in social work is usually required.

So can I tell them I could find a job in Saskatchewan or something because it says "usually" and not "always"? But still, how to dodge the no-degree-in-social-work thing with the immigration officer? What are the experiences of other people with this issue? I'm sure many of them must have gone through something similar..Are such applications accepted or rejected mostly?

Really confused now! What to do? I don't want to be doing 1 yr of work to get nothing in the end :(
3. There is no way to predict for 4152 Social Worker. However, plumbers and electricians have been there always.
I wish I could do those but I have no skills whatsoever for those. Same goes for chef, cooks...Any other categories I should think of?

Am also applying as a Social Worker, I have done graduation in Sociology, and worked as Field social coordinator, & Field Social Organizor for 04 years. Main thing is u should have minimum one year experience in NOC within the 29 NOCs, to apply..... You have the experience, u have 67 points then go for it man...

What i think is to work as a social worker in Canada u need to have a background of Socio-studies, but u can have work in india or Pakistan, with any graduate degree, (Masters in Management is more than fine nevillek!)
