Hi all,

I would like some help and suggestions in my case. I'll explain below:
I am a July 2022 family citizenship applicant. Everything is marked as completed except for citizenship ceremony which is similar to other July 2022 applicants so I am waiting.
My first and last name was all entered in Last name field so I had applied for a name change a little time after I started my citizenship application.
Right now, I have received my name change certificate couple of days ago. I am supposed to have my driver's license eand other IDs updated with my new name.
What I was thinking was to complete the oath ceremony and get the citizenship certificate in my old name so as not to affect that application. Once I receive the certificate, then I would update my IDs and apply for passport with the new name( I think this was also suggested by some members on a previous thread)
The question I have are:
1. since my name has been updated with Vital statistics BC, would it also notify IRCC that my name has updated?
2. Should I just wait for my oath and then update name change later?

Or if anyone can suggest what I should do I would really appreciate it.

Thank you

I repeat my general warning (for others, not you): do NOT apply for new certificate of citizenship after change of name (ie with new name) before getting a passport in new name with change of name docs. Because if you do, you have to mail in your old certificate and won't be able to apply for a passport (at least not without big hassles).

Back to your case:
1. Very little happens automatically between provinces and feds on stuff like this. Could be, but I doubt it.
2. I would generally recommend that people wait and get their certificate after citizenship in old name and then apply for passport after (if they're only looking at starting the change of name). (And then update certificate after passport because apart from using it to get passport, probably will never use it again).

My guess is it won't hurt you to advise IRCC of change in name and hope that you get certificate in new name. If they do, great, you've saved a step, if they don't, you're probably no worse off (proceed as above).

That said, there is a possibility doing so will cause some delay, but I have zero information about how likely that is.

It's up to you - if you had your oath ceremony tomorrow, I'd just let it ride for now, but if uncertain, you'll just have to decide.

Thank you so much for your reply. It's really helpful.
Yes it makes sense to just hang on till I receive the certificate of citizenship based on my old name. If I try updating it now, it seems it might take even longer (as it is, it's taking quite long).
So once I receive my certificate, I will update my other IDs with the new name, and then apply for the passport with the name change certificate, new IDs in new name and have the passport issued in new name. Does that sequence sound right?

Thank you

Basically. You can actually go ahead and change your other docs now, if you want, and apply for the passport once you have the citizenship certificate.

Hi Armoured, that's actually what I wanted to do.
The reason I wasn't doing that yet(updating documents now) was that I was assuming that during the oath ceremony they need to check my ID to verify my name? Any idea about that? Because as you suggested, that could save me some time later on if I updated my IDs now

I don't think that's worth getting too worried about. You'll have sufficient ability to prove who you are. Keep the name change docs to hand just in case to show as well. If they ask about the certificate, just say it's fine as it is and you'll get it corrected later after you get passport.

Worst case again is it takes a bit longer to get certificate but my guess is it won't, they'll just print and send it. From bureaucratic point of view, not their problem.
