Hello,

Currently my wife is applying for family sponorship to get permanent resisdence and I am her sponsor. And I was in a common law relationship with my ex girl friend(she was my sponsor) and our relationship ended 5 years ago but I don't know the date that we became a common law partner nor date we ended. Is it okay to check NO for the question? or i must check YES ? If I need to check YES but dont know the date, how can I find it? I remembered i signed on some papers when we broke up but i dont have it now. Is there any ways to find the date?

Checking 'no' is misrepresentation (lying in your application). It will result in a refusal of the application and a five year ban from Canada for your wife. You must check 'yes'. Put the approximate dates - you must know those.

Surely you know aproximate dates even month/year ? Maybe attach a letter of explanation given unlike a marriage there is no formal registration of common law either start or end so explain this in the letter that dayes are approximate.

But for sure answer Yes to the question in case it ever comes up in the future, for example if there were a remote chance your ex has dealings with immigration for some other reason or even as a sponsor where your name gets quoted for same question.
