Please help me further understand the CEC

Hey everyone,

I'm from the Caribbean but I hold Danish citizenship. I'm going into my second year of radio broadcasting at Algonquin College. When I graduate next year, I'd like to stay in Canada. Here's what I know about the CEC (please correct me if I'm wrong)

- When I graduate, I can get a 3 year post-grad work permit. In those 3 years, I have to hold a job for a total of 1 year.
- The job has to be at a certain level.
- I must work a minimum of 30 hours per week to qualify for "full-time" status.

I've been doing some volunteer work with a marketing company here in Ottawa and they're willing to hire me on as a Production Manager next year when I graduate. I'll be given no less than 30 hours per week. Will this be enough to qualify for Permanent Residency? I understand that I'll need a letter from my employer as well. What must that letter contain?

If I graduate in 2015 and work from the moment I graduate for one full-time year, can I apply for PR before my post-grad work permit expires? I would think so - but I'd like to make sure.

Thank you so much for your time. This has really kept me up at night for a while and I've considered hiring a lawyer, but the financial situation isn't that ideal at the moment.

Thanks again,

Nick

@nicolairaw

Rules are changing. Wait till Express Entry is launched in January 2015.

You can read all about it here: http://www.cic.gc.ca/english/immigrate/express/express-entry.asp

@Zareef - yeah I read that. Looks like nobody knows more than the other at this point. Very interesting stuff.. and good news for many but bad news for some as well. I guess I'll just wait and see.

Now the question remains in my head.. Where would I rather go back to if I don't get PR.. Barbados or Copenhagen? Aghhhh.

Thanks a mil,

N

It's good to plan ahead, even thought yes, the rules will be changing. But it is likely that most program elements (e.g eligibility requirements) won't change too much. You can read about the current eligiility requirements here - in particular, review the Instruction Guide and document checklist -
http://www.cic.gc.ca/english/information/applications/cec.asp

As for current guidance on eligible occupations, you'd have to find the NOC code and determine the level - "skilled" currently means Level O, A, or B...
http://www5.hrsdc.gc.ca/NOC/English/NOC/2011/html/Matrix.html

For some examples, this is a search using the key word "marketing"
http://www5.hrsdc.gc.ca/NOC/English/NOC/2011/SearchKeywordResult.aspx?val11=marketing&val12=0&val13=0&val14=&val15=0&val16=0
