Doesn't it say on the visas what date people need to land by if they still wish to activate their PR?

I am quite sure that additional applicants must land with the principle applicant.

Can someone give a definite answer?

I don;t have the visas in hand yet. They are on the way. Someone told me I have to have one with me and the other can come later. But i am worried if I let him go then I will be stuck not able to land.

Your visas will be valid for 1 year after the date of the medical, you and your family will have to "land" by that date. If your son doesn't land by the expiry date, the he would have to be sponsored in the future.
PS. Bobshnoswife, only the principal applicant has to land first, the dependents can "land" anytime afterwards, as long as their visas are valid.

Thank you so much for your response. I really appreciate. I finally got through to an agent and that is exactly what he said.
