Hi Guys,

Googled a bit and got the link to this extremely helpful forum. Believe me i say so because i have surfed others but this one is providing first-hand experience from the individuals.

I have made up my mind to apply for the September '13 intake. Here's my profile :

1.Xth - 84.4%
2.XIIth - 63.4%
3.B.Tech (Civil Engg.) - 65%. Zero Backlogs. Detailed Major & Minor Projects alongwith a seminar. Got campus placed as well for a firm but yet to join.
4.IELTS : 7.5

I'll be applying for M.S/M.Engg in Civil to the following universities : University Of Sasktachewan, University Of Alberta, University Of Calgary. What are my acceptance chances ? Strong, Nil or Moderate ? Which other universities do u guys recommend ? More interested for public uni's rather than the private one's.

Also, to the members who are already living there, how's the study level over there ? Is it tough, easy or manageable especially M.S/M.Engg.? I am looking to complete my course in 1yr. time or max. 1.5yrs. Apart from the tuition fee of ~$8000/yr, how much more expenses likely to be incurred mainly involving accommodation and food ?

Lastly, on what basis are the scholarships offered to the international students. Need to know cos then i'll try my level best to obtain one.

Looking forward to your replies. Thanks in anticipation.

Don't go for private institutes if you want to get OCWP,PGWP and PR. Your profile is good and you can get admission in moderate universities. Scholarships for M.Eng. is very difficult..............

@ Momi, Thanks for the reply. I believe U of S, U of A, U of C all are state funded i.e Public uni's, isn't t ? Or are they private ? How's the reputation of U of S ? And one more thing, which is easier : M.S or M.Engg ?

kPulkit !
Pros : Zero backlogs, Good IELTS score

Cons: aggregate less than 70%

Scholarships are really difficult for M. Eng. programmes in Canada. Go for the universities, you will get it but apply at the earliest :)

Good luck ! :)

Hi,

Congrats on getting placed. Is the job profile core civil /related or other like software? Most Universities require 70% minimum for admission to their Master programmes.

Some like Memorial University accept second class B.E degrees. You may consider Memorial University, Newfoundland. It has one of the lowest tuition fees in Canada, offering M.Eng in Civil, where accepted candidates 've a fair chance of getting scholarship and funding. But, it's a research based degree.
http://www.mun.ca/become/graduate/programs/engineering.php

You may search for more appropriate Master degrees in Civil/related field. Here's the list of public educational institutes eligible for both OCWP+PGWP.
http://www.cic.gc.ca/english/study/institutions/participants.asp
Go through all the University websites, listed in above link, and search for more number of Master programmes, as per your requirements.

Most of the Universities have fall intake (Sept'13). Deadline being Oct or Nov 1st (2012). Join your job, and in mean time, start all procedures for admissions to Master's for 2013 fall intake.

As per CIC, Keep atleast 10,000$/year for overall living expenses.

Once, you shortlist a say..dozen universities/programmes... you then Contact the department heads/faculties present them , with your updated profile and research interest(if applying to a research based programme). They will let you know, if you may be eligible to apply.

Admissions and funding by universities is largely based on your overall profile.

Best of Luck.

Check out Windsor University !! They may give you an admission as you have no backlogs as when I have been to a Canada fair for spot admissions, he said I can't take you because you have 4 backlogs though you have a good aggregate(74.21%). Do consult other sources too !

http://www.uwindsor.ca/civil/graduate-program

For lower tuition fees, try Memorial University as suggested by tiger007.

Good luck dude ! :)

Thank you all for the insights. Really appreciated. :)

@vaisnavgowni, i'm still weighing my option on which course to opt for. Can go in for M.S irrespective of the scholarship. But what i'm concerned about is the level of education, in other words the toughness scale. I'm not having even 1% idea on what's the study pattern, marking and examination. The other thing, what exactly is the 'research' we have to conduct ? For eg., in my minor project i did a Soil Investigation report performing various test to ascertain the soil quality and in major project, it involved a comparison of High Alumina Cement (Refractory Castables) & the OPC. Is research on the similar lines to what we call Projects in India ? M.Engg is theoretical and easier, can be done in 1yr .. that's why i was more keen on that. But what's the scenario for M.S ? Can we complete it in 1-1.5yr, and not that by straining ourselves throughout the year.

Secondly, are there chances for getting accepted in those uni's which demand 70% even if i have scored 65% + other parameters (projects, seminars, backlogs, job offers) ? Or do they cross ur applications if u fail even in 1 aspect ?

@Tiger007,
Thanks ! Yeah, i got placed in a core civil engg. company.

I am not quite keen on MUoNF as literally, it's in one corner of the continent, and from what i can ascertain, the climate conditions would be quite harsh over there owing to the locality of Atlantic. Also, not so sure of finding jobs over there after degree completion. But, the tuition fee is almost negligible  I am relying heavily on U of Saskatchewan cos from what i've researched, the opportunities for a Civil Engg. is massive. Also, the govt. is promoting immigrants so getting PR would be easy, even though i would be returning to India after a period of 5-6 yrs. Also, i came across an article that mentioned u can get entire tuition fee back as a rebate after u become a graduate and get settled. But i would be obliged if you could guide me better in this aspect.

For the University of Alberta, solely because it ranks in the Top 100 and research funding is abundant.

Now, Civil engineering is one of the hot branches in engineering ;) Just give a try on few universities and of course few of them will reject. Don't worry. Keep trying !

And regarding their education, you will learn it once you step into Canada :)

Or you can do your job for 1-2 years and then you can apply for Masters. :) End of the day, it is you who is going to decide :) Good Luck ! :)

@vaishnav, which uni's acc. to u are ambitious, moderate or safe that i cn apply too ? What about the 3 uni's i mentioned above ? Minimum no. of uni's that i should apply to ?

Can anyone tell me about the living standards/conditions, off-campus accomodation and jobs status of Saskatchewan ?

Also, should i apply through a counselor or directly ? The counselor is quoting a pretty steep fee i.e Rs.5000/uni incl. of courier charges. If its advisable to apply directly, can i get a link to the step by step guide ? One the dept. pages of respective uni's, the requirements and docs are given that need to be submitted, but what exactly is the procedure. Rs.5K/uni is approximately paying double to application fee i.e $100*twice (1 as application + 1 to the counselor).

Usually for Canada, you have to apply at the earliest and keep it as 5 universities - 1 dream university, 2 universities(in which you are sure to get an admission), 2 universities(again in which you are sure to get an admission) that's how it works for Canada :D

You can apply by yourself :) Just go through the website for requirements twice or thrice and revert back to the forum if you have any queries. :)

Regarding the universities, apply for Windsor, Memorial, Concordia, Saskatchewan and Carleton and please do consult other sources too !! :)

Well, You Have a GREAT IELTS score of 7.5 but don't be over happy with that and apply to to top ranked universities..like UOT, UOW,UOA,Mcmaster, Mcgill....u might ruin your money ....
But , sometimes it also depends on what type of course you want to take...as well..I am from engineering background so for engineering courses competition is always high
So, i would suggest you to apply in atleast 3 universities -- from 3 different provinces if you don't want to go to any specific one...
Concordia University ( Most Chances)
Carelton University or University Of ottawa ( Apply to carleton ...means applying to both ...only one organisation running both universities as they have a clause that if u dnt get selected in carleton ,then ur application move forward to univ of ottawa)

University of Saskatchwan
or
University of Manitoba
NOTE-- BUT APPLY AS EARLY AS YOU CAN ....

@Harshpreet & @Vaishnav : Thanks for the replies.

I've decided to file my application for : U of Saskatchewan, Windsor, Calgary, Alberta & Carleton. Please specify my chances for each, and if u feel replacing any uni by another (like Alberta with Manitoba), do mention that. Your opinion counts. The only thing that is bugging me is my low aggregate. I'll be quite happy if i manage through U of S. For the Alberta, my hopes aren't that much cos its world ranking ~100, so obviously owing to the high competition my chances are skim.

Are Carleton & Concordia public or private universities ? I'm preferring the former ones. Also, what is the general deadline for the September 13 intake for international students ?

And in which programme are my chances more : M.Engg or MASc ?

Firstly GO FOR IT.... u selected the good ones..i mean no matter ALBERTA is top university...you also have to try ur luck...as ur also applying to other universities that has pretty good chances of taking you...

Secondly , Both Carleton and Concordia are Public universities...you can check on google..
DEADLINES for the courses , either you find out on their site ..but i would suggest you to email d faculty of department of these unive..(of which course you want to apply) seperately, they will give you reply in 1-2 days..hopefully..
In my view , You have to apply in october or november atleast.. in all of the universities.

Thirdly, You should go for Mengg , better suited to you.. as Masc is highly researched based program that requires really good percentage and so many research papers
