I will be flying to Newfoundland on a 2-way ticket from April to July. We will be married in April and send in our Outland application right afterward.

In July, I fly back here for 2 weeks. Then, when I fly back to Newfoundland, can I get a one-way ticket?

What reason could I use when I'm questioned? Possibly say, my husband will be driving me back in 6 months?

Any other reasons I could give?

are you planning to just stay in Canada??????

I have visited my husband several times with a one way ticket...I usually tell the officers about how long I plan to stay and that I might return a little earlier to the US (for work) and that I would buy my ticket back when I knew for sure the date...but I always gave them a date and I always left on that date...they ask a lot of questions about my ties to the US..like where I live, or my job...I just answer as honestly as possible...

I plan on staying the usual 6 months but my PR may be granted before that so I don't really want to get a 2-way and lose the return part -- that's a lot of money.
I'm retired so don't have a job to tie me here. I do have my apartment rental agreement and my car insurance, plus my last 3 bank statements showing that I get Social Security each month.

You can always get a refundable return ticket.

I checked with American Airlines and they don't do refundable. They credit you so you can use the ticket another time,
so that doesn't really save me any money if I never use it. :(

What about any other airline? Many people book two one-way tickets with different carries. Perhaps you can find one with a fully refundable fare after all.

Or...book a bus ticket. Anything showing your intent to leave, will work to your advantage.

If you book a bus ticket and are questioned as to why you'd take a bus `home'...simply state that your finances were stretched but you still made provisions for your return as required.

We are a small city. American and United are the only airlines flying out of here and they have the same policy.

Bus ticket might be good idea! I'll look into it.

So, you don't think that telling them he is driving me back (so he can meet my family) would work?

I think if you are honest with them you should be ok. You have already filed your PR application, yes? If so, bring copies of the receipts/papers when you arrive tell them you are here to visit your husband for a few months. Let them know you have an application in progress. Tell them you would like to stay for the duration of the application process with your husband and that you understand you can not work or go to school. Tell them you are currently retired anyway, and would like to enjoy all the time you can with your spouse. Tell them you will leave before 6 months has expired, but would love it if they could issue you a 12 month visitor record so you could remain with your hubby while the application finishes up. Bring copies of your police clearances, if you have them, they always like to see a squeaky clean record and are more willing to give out a 12 month visitor record if they know you won't be found criminally inadmissable in the end.

Of course, this all presupposes you have indeed filed your PR application already ....

Just be prepared to be denied entry. I my husband and I planned on me staying with him for 5 months while he finished out a work contract in BC. They denied me entry stating we could not prove that my husband made enough money to support us both. my husband is a member of the Canadians Armed Forces, and was told that the boarder officer thought he was lying about being financially stable enough to care for a wife who legally couldn't work. We've also been told, many times, that the "allowed" 6 months is not for everyone. It is 100% up to the officer how long each visitors is allowed to stay. The officer could order you to leave in a few weeks, few months or not allowed you in at all. And in my experience, telling them you will stay longer if approved is not a smart move. To the officer, they hear that you will 100% stay longer no matter what. You need to be honest, but also tell them what they want to hear. My husband and I ate constantly questioned and the officer is always trying to trick us into saying I am living in CA, or he is living in the US. We visit each other monthly and are questioned each and every time.

My, that sounds so unfair. Hope it's all over for you soon and you won't have to go through that.

Are you a US citizen? Did you show up with all kinds of 'belongings' when you came to stay for 5 months?

I gave Benni advice based on my own experiences at the border and what they do and do not like to hear and see.

If they are questioning you each and every time you both cross it is likely because at some point in time one or the other of you were 'flagged' in the system which never goes away. That causes them to scrutinize you more closely every time you cross the border.
