Hello,

I am currently in India and cannot come back to Canada due to COVID. I am currently looking for a new job but am unable to do the initial steps due to lack of a Canadian number. Is there a google voice alternative in Canada, so that I can make calls to companies for my job search

You try using 'Hushed' app on your phone. It gives you a Canadian number for incoming/outgoing voice and text. If you are more adventurous, you can also try opening an account with Anveo and use a SIP box to configure your Anveo Canada number to make and receive calls.

You can also try to open a BYOD account with a VOIP provider in Canada and configure it to work on internet in India.

If you still have an address and a credit card in Canada, you can open a prepaid account with Freedom Mobile ($99/yr plan) and get an esim remotely. In India, you can use FM on Wi-Fi calling with no additional charges for incoming and outgoing calls to Canada.

Check out voip.ms ; I got my first Canadian number there 6 months prior to moving here, which I still use as "home" phone. Also got additional numbers for my businesses. It is reliable, affordable, and you can set up redirect of both voice and sms to your home mobile phone.
