Hi! Usually they'll require good academic records; in your case a Masters degree, English proficiency tests, research proposal, transcript of records, letter of references. They may also require you copies of your published researches.

As to how to apply, the most efficient and effective way to know the procedures and policies in applying for a Canadian university is to check out their websites. This can be very useful.

Hi,

Usually a minimum 1st class 4 years Bachelor's degree+ 2 years Master degree is required for students from India to apply for PHds in your field of study across Canadian public universities. Depending upon universities and specific departments, they may even consider 1 year Master degrees, in case you have very good academic record form prestigious educational institutions like say IITs or IISc. getting into a Phd program is highly competitive, where one generally needs to show some knack for research (like published papers) and selected students usually get full funding.

Here's the list of ALL recognized Canadian educational institutes eligible for OCWP (Off Campus Work Permit)+PGWP (Post grad Work Pemrit), listed according to province:
http://www.cic.gc.ca/english/study/institutions/participants.asp

You need to go through the university department websites, contact the university departments to know more such as course content, Phd degree options, deadlines, tuition fees, admission procedure etc. You will have to do the hard work to find the right type of programs of your desire and shortlist a list of say atleast 4-6 more universities, you may consider applying to.

The application submission date for Fall 2013 (Sept) start in most universities is already long over, and you should consider applying for 2014 Fall intake, , for which usually the last date can be as early as !st Nov. 2013.

After completing 2 years of your Phd, you can apply for direct immigration/PR - Permanent Residence under Federal PHD stream.

Best of Luck.
