Hi,

I recently graduated from the University of Toronto with a BASc degree. Due to some unavoidable circumstances, I wasn't able to apply for a PGWP before my study permit expired (expired on 8th June).

I'm aware that I have less than 90 days to apply for restoration but what status should I be asking to be restored? I finished studies so I can't technically have my "status restored as a student". And I haven't been working so I can't ask for my status to be restored as a worker either.

What should I do in such a scenario?

Should I simply try filling in an IMM5710E and request for "an initial work permit" (Question 3) without checking the "restoration" box and also attach a letter of explanation with details on my current situation and what led to this?

If not, what would be the right way to resolve this issue? Would really appreciate any help that I can get on this!

Hello, I'm going through the same. What did you end up doing?

You need to apply for restoration, and a study permit extension and a PGWP. You need to pay the fee for each one, $200 for restoration, $150 for the study permit, and $255 for PGWP( 155 work permit plus 100 open work permit fee) for a total of $605 dollars. Make sure you check the box for restoration. You should have been given an extra 90 days after completion of studies so you can apply for a PGWP, so you got screwed. I would explain that in my application.

The theory behind this explanation is that you need a valid study permit to get a PGWP, thats non-negotiable. So to do that you need to apply for restoration AND a study permit extension. Now you're not perusing your studies, so they have no reason to extend it, however since you also applied for your PGWP (make sure you paid the proper fees and sent the proper paperwork like your passport pages, final transcript and letter of completion so they don't reject this) they can approve your study permit momentarily just to approve the PGWP. There is no guarantee they will approve this but other people managed to get a PGWP this way on an expired study permit, so that is your only play. I heard the paper application is better than the online, since it's more clear on what you are trying to achieve.
