Hi there,

A bit of a unique situation. Sorry if it has been covered before but I was having no luck with the search.

My Post Graduate Work Permit ends this March 18, 2017. That gives me less than 2 months. I've been working for a financial company for the past 2.5 years as an analyst.
I've applied last week for permanent residency through the spousal sponsorship as my spouse is Canadian.
Now I know that I need to extend my current work permit (bridge extension?) but I'm really having trouble finding out the steps. I'm on the CIC account.
Could anyone direct me towards what my next steps are to get an extension as I wait for the results of my permanent residency?

Thanks in advance.

I am in process of applying for the work permit extension online. I guess my question is I haven't been approved for the initial stage of my permanent residency through the spousal sponsorship as I just applied last week. However, I don't want to wait so long as my work permit is ending in less than 2 months. Do you think it's okay to apply for the work permit extension although I haven't heard anything back?

You don't qualify for a bridging open work permit if you have applied for PR through spousal sponsorship. The BOWP is only available to individuals who have applied for PR through an economic immigration class (like Express Entry). How did your spouse sponsor you for PR? Inland or outland? If outland, then unfortunately you don't qualify for a work permit. If inland, ideally you should have submitted an open work permit (different than a BOWP) with your sponsorship application package.

Thanks for your response.

I've applied inland as I'm currently working in Canada (i think that's what you mean).
I'm thinking it may be better to apply for the open work permit online, as the processing times are faster.

What happens if I apply for the open work permit without receiving an initial approval first (that I would receive when they go through my spousal sponsorship application and approve initially as they go through the application)?
