PGWP expiring soon and no CEC draw

Hi folks,

I need some opinion about what I can do. I know going home is the last option but I am looking for tried and tested options here.

My PGWP expires on 18th Jan , 2022. I have qualified under CEC under express entry in November however as we all know there has been no draw since a while.

Can I apply for PGWP extension (I know it would be rejected), to buy more time for a possible CEC draw?

Thank you!

From my understanding, there are currently no options to extend your PGWP. I believe your best option would be to apply for a temporary resident visa and stop working until a draw occurs - no one knows when the next CEC draw will be. Otherwise, returning to your home country and then submit your CEC application from there.

Another possibility is to apply for a closed work permit through your employer? But that will depend on your employer.

I agree with @rainbowsunicorns. It would be best to apply for visitor visa and stay here until the next CEC draw happens and that way you can submit your application. Once you get your AOR, apply for BOWP.
PGWP cannot be extended except it only happened in 2020 where people were able to extend for further 18 months and that because of Covid.

Try to see if your employer can support you for LMIA and that you can apply for closed WP but that would depend on your employer.

Which province are you in? Some province allow for PNP without Job Offer for Grads from their province (eg. BC). That could have given you min 1 year worth of OWP and a stab at PNP based PR which in turn could lead to BOWP. I might say you are a bit late though. PNP processing in such short time will be hard to do.

While you can apply for a PGWP extension, your application will be rejected as "incomplete or similar" and you will be out of status from the date of expiry of your original status making you ineligible for any further status as you may be out of restoration of status window. Consult a consultant or a lawyer.

The only simple and realistic option is a Visitor Record that will give you some time to apply for PNP. I do not know if you will be able to apply for a work permit from within Canada though. Check "Come to Canada" tool.

You cannot apply for BOWP after your work permit has expired, that information is wrong. You will not be able to work again until your PR application gets approved if you switch to visitor.

What a lot of CEC applicants in your situation are doing is applying for BOWP right before their work permit expires. Even though they did not get ITA yet. This way, you can keep working until your BOWP application gets declined, so it could buy you a few months. Meanwhile hope to get invited soon. It’s definitely not ideal and I don’t know if I would recommend it, but it’s what many people are doing right now as they are being forced into impossible situations by IRCC ‍♀

Hi everyone just for information, as you all know my work permit was expiring in Jan 2022 and I had not received a CEC invitation nor was I eligible for PNP at that point of time. So I applied for an extension of my PGWP without an AOR and got 4 months of automatic extension. In those four months I switched by job to a province based employer and post my notice period requested them to support my application for PNP. I put in my PNP application in April and go it approved by May. Till this time i was yet to receive a decision on the PGWP extension. Post PNP nomination I was invited to apply for PR after the PNP draw and I put in my application within a week and got the AOR, with which I applied for a BOWP officially as one of the rules of BOWP allows me to apply for it while being on implied status. This was in May mid and last week I received an approval for my work permit for 2 years. So the risk I took worked out well in the end. :)
