PGWP - Company based out of US

Hi Everyone,
So I have a question, I have recently applied for a PGWP, but recently I have received a job offer from a start up based in the US. I would still be in Toronto, just working for a Company and Clients based out of the US. Is that legal? Also, what happens to my chances of getting an OHIP. On the website it mentions: "
  • You have a work permit that is valid for at least 6 months. You also have a formal agreement to work full-time for an employer in Ontario. The agreement states the employer's name, your occupation, and states that you will be working for at least 6 consecutive months.
"
I will be working in Ontario, but my employer is in US.

Any help or clarification is deeply appreciated. Thanks in advance!

Yes - it's legal to work for a US employer on a PGWP.

No - you will not qualify for OHIP since your employer isn't in Ontario. OHIP is extremely strict with these rules. I would expect your chances of getting OHIP accidentally are close to zero. You should look into taking out private insurance to cover yourself for emergencies. You'll have to pay for non-emergency care out of pocket.

Note that your work for the US company will not count as Canadian work experience since your employer is not located here.

This is not true. OHIP will cover topic starter if he provides a letter from employer that he/she is working from home as a home-based employee with Ontario address. Ontario doesn't care about US or non-US based company as soon as you paying your taxes in province.

For CEC, that experience may not qualify if company doesn't have physical office in Canada

That's good to hear. I have a friend who had issues with this and OHIP refused him (he tried several times with different letters). I'll have to tell him to try again.
