Per https://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/saskatoon/family-reunification-program-backlogs-1.7091355 there are some 76000 applications pending.

Also this year they will nominate 32000 folks this year per https://www.cicnews.com/2023/11/ircc-memo-highlights-parents-and-grandparents-program-challenges-1141160.html#gs.6cu1uj

Is my understanding here correct then that it will be 32000 out of the 76000 remaining?

In 2025 then it'll be another 34000 out of the 76000 effectively clearing out the backlog?

Thanks!

Given the government’s cuts to the number of immigrants through economic programs due to housing/healthcare etc., expect that not as many PGP nominations will go out this year. CIC article is from last year. You will know about requirements and numbers when 2024 program is announced.

CBC article is about backlog (so those already nominated and waiting for PR) not those in the 2020 pool who have yet to be selected. That pool is over 100k. The article talks about people waiting since 2017. So nominating 34K in 2024 will not clear the backlog but add to it.

I suppose also we aren't sure that they will use the 2020 pool if at all this year? Odds are they will. But no clear indication just yet.

The article btw is from Nov 2023 per a guideline I think the Canadian govt put out. Have there been amends to it since?

There has been no news regarding to PGP.
But recently there is announcement on limiting temporary residents in the up coming 2 years. (temp worker/student permit...)
Not sure if there will be other policy on PR applications.

Given all the government announcements limiting the number of temporary residents, provinces halting/changing/decreasing number of PNP nominations, specified NOC draws and polls wanting fewer immigrations, I can see the PGP program being cut back. Don’t have doctors/housing for skilled workers and students.

So are your parents in the 2020 pool? If so and IRCC keeps selecting from that pool, parents have a good chance of being selected in the next few years.
Yah they are. But still based on the numbers discussed here - it seems the odds are still kinda poor :( - maybe 1 in 5 or 1 in 4 this year. Was hoping it'd be more like 1 in 2 this year based on my earlier math.

Oh well.

Class action law suit for what? This is a not a program written in law and can be cancelled at any time.
Class action law suit as per IRPA regulation.... there are groups of people who are allowed family reunification by bringing parents, grandparents, children, siblings and even HALF siblings without lottery within 6 months while we Canadian citizens wait decades and are playing lottery, lottery WHICH is not even available past 4 years. Family reunification is family reunification. Family is family, you cannot give one group of people right to family and deprive others... and let other parents die alone waiting to play lottery. plus this lottery system for family members (biological parents) is most inhuman program one can implement in civil society! What if you dont win parents in lottery??? Then What? you are just unlucky and dont deserve a family? It should be for everyone or no one. You cannot give one group the right to family and deprive other group the right, parents cannot be won in lottery... unfortunately parents dont live forever either... waiting for a decade + to sponsor your parents as a eligible sponsor is WRONG! Either everyone is equal under the law or NO ONE IS.

IRPA - Objectives — immigration

  • 3 (1) The objectives of this Act with respect to immigration are
    • (d) to see that families are reunited in Canada;
