Personal History (18th birthday or 10 years back ?)

Hi guys,

I was wondering if someone here could give me some clarification on this.
In (IMM 5669 (07-2011) E, Schedule A, background/declaration), they say that:
"Provide details of your personal history since the age of 18, or the past 10 years, whichever comes first. Start with the most recent information."

I am 24 now (Birthday in June, 1987). Should I just list back to June 2005 (18th Birthday) or all the way to August 2001 (10 years back from today) ?

Thanks guys,

back to your 18th birthday.

Note that "the past 10 years" is a recent change. (THANK YOU CIC!). Before it was back to the 18th birthday, no matter how long ago that was (in my case, 1980 - my application was ridiculous). NOW the rules are in line with Australia etc...

The rule hasn't really changed, from what i understand. If you are 30 years old, for instance, then you have to still have to account for as far back as your 18th birthday- you take the longer period.

Look at the NEW background declaration form (released July 2011) - see the difference between the instructions for "8. Personal History" and "12. Addresses". You still have to provide all addresses since your 18th birthday, but for the personal history, it now says "Provide the details of your personal history since the age of 18, or the past 10 years, whichever comes first."

On the old Schedule 1, the instructions for personal history were the same as for the addresses - "provide the details of your personal history since the age of 18."

Thanks for your replies, guys.

The reason I brought this question up here is because it's one of the most important ones in the application. So I apologize if it appears to be sort of 'pretty clear' already (and why ask?)

Now that I looked at the sentence again, Here's what I think they meant:

"Provide details of your personal history since the age of 18, or the past 10 years, whichever comes first. Start with the most recent information."

If you start with the most recent, and flow backward in time:
- if you're 24, then you will hit your 18th birthday first.

- if you're 30, then you will hit your 10-year-back point in time first (20th birthday)

tung, I think you are exactly right. Strange wording, I couldn't understand why they wrote it that way, but your logic shows why.

Yeah, I found this confusing too -- I was reading the forms earlier today and noticed this change.

Thanks tung for the explanation, it makes more sense now!

My understanding is:

Whatever your age is, minus 10 from it, if:

- below 18, start from your 18th bd.
- above 18, start with the last 10 yrs
- equal 18, then right on!

That's pretty awful wording. "Comes first" can just as well be interpreted as "earlier", meaning that if you're 19, you need to provide your personal history since you were 9.

The French instructions say:

"Veuillez préciser vos antécédents personnels depuis l’âge de 18 ans, ou les 10 dernières années, selon la première éventualité."

My French isn't nearly good enough to know whether éventualité is any less ambiguous than the English...

Terrible wording, but I think you've got it right tung92. I'm 28 either way its fine for me :D

Hello (I'm new here and I'm french as well ;) )

Even in french I was lost with this sentence but I think tung92 is right.

The wording in french seems to say :
If you were 18 years 10 or less, 10 years ago: juste stop at 18.
If you're older than 18, just stop 10 years ago (I'm 40 and we are in 2011, so I just stop at 2001).

In fact I was searching for an answer and I found it here : easier to find solutions when you're more than one :D
