Hi... I am a legal permanent resident of Canada, but my permanent visa is now expired. I have applied for citizenship but it may take over a year to process and I need to travel to the States before my citizenship will be granted (and again, presently my permanent visa is expired). I am an American, so I will be able to enter the US easily, but I want to know how I will be able to get back into Canada with an expired permanent resident card. I would like to have an answer from someone who knows or has experienced the process or can give me a phone number to call for clarification. Thank you!

I do not have a nexis card. I could look into getting one, but really, I just want to see if my pending citizenship application will work to gain entry back into Canada (I have a mortgage here).

I called CBSA, 1-800-461-9999 www DOT cbsa-asfc DOT gc.ca and was told that if travelling by air that I should call the flight carrier and ask if they would have any concern. He said if I can enter the US without any problem that I will be able to return to Canada without any problem. He recommended that I find my original record of landing and confirmation of PR to help any possible concern. He said in a worse case I would be passed on to a second level security just to confirm my residency and assured me that I would be able to re-enter. A side note, he said if travelling by land there is less red tape at the boarder.
